Is musical beauty as in "that was a beautiful piece" the same as plastic
beauty as in a "beautiful painting" or as in "what a beautiful poem"?  Or,
how about a beautiful women?  Or, what about the full sense beautiful
feeling one experiences caressing a beautiful woman ?  All different input
and processing functions, even different references.  

Hot peppers add pain creating a good chili taste. Is this what is meant by
the juxtaposition of beauty and pain?  Can the pain shown in the painting of
the saint full of arrows be experienced as beautiful? How about Picasso's
work on the bombing Gurnica? Is the fundamentally religious art of a Tibetan
Tonka beautiful even though its intention is to serve as a window to another
form of one's own consciousness?

Is political art such as socialist realism beautiful?

The experience of beauty in music is a complex interplay between the
structure of the present element compared to the past and what is
anticipated in the future. The range of feelings and esthetics far exceeds
any verbal or measurement capacity.  Mauritian and others considered it a
different form of knowing as other artistic activities.  Different from the
rational. This is not to say that the brain does not bare its imprint,
rather that kinesthetic and the overall life and organization of the body
(rhythm and the vibration of meat and bones at a rock concert for example)
in a "dance" of multiple knowings may be important. What are we to do with
Freud and the irrational as expressed in Surrealism; beauty of the cut
eyeball for example?

 Ahh, the beauty of a dancing women in flowing dress or nude (two forms of
beauty appealing to different mixes of aspects of the male mind) to sweet
music!

My point about Coltrane is that he and others like him explore the full
range of emotions and intellectual life beautifully. Can I say what he
played? No.
