Vol. 098: About CET pt. 2
by Ozaki Tetsuya

The "Vision Quest" exhibition featuring the likes of Dogane Yuji,
Hiro Sugiyama, Katsumata Kunihiko and Ogawa Itaru, was curated
by Harada Yukiko this year. I only managed to drop by after the
event closed so I can't comment on the show (sorry, Harada-san!),
but anyway I'd give the first prize to the (temporarily) revived
Complesso Plastico (Hirano Jiro + Matsukage Hiroyuki) for their
interactive installation. They filled the first floor of the
two-story private house that accomodated the exhibition with
dense, white mist, into which they projected from outside visuals
ranging from soft to extremely intense. With a range of vision of
only a few centimetres visitors were forced to grope through the
mix of fog and light as if they were diving in cloudy water. The
setting reminded me of "Dialogue in the Dark", and a little bit
also of the "Re-mapping Tokyo" theme of CET2004.

Tokyo Nightscape 2050

Have you ever thought about how the nightscape of Tokyo in the
year 2050 could look like? The "One million people's candle night"
is enjoying popularity, so maybe the habit of using flashy lights
will disappear, but we might as well experience a growing
development of LED and other lighting technology that will result
in even more dazzling brightness. This event gives a total of 119
designers, photographers, architects, artists and others the
chance to show their ideas of the city's nightscape in 2050. Under
the direction of Mende Kaoru, who is responsible for the lighting
in the Roppongi Hills complex, the likes of Astrid Klein + Mark
Dytham, Oiwa Oscar Satio, Uchida Shigeru, Igarashi Taro, and others
contribute to a unique exhibition by presenting their presumptions
in texts and visuals.
