PEOPLE WITH WAY TOO MUCH FREE TIME ON THEIR HANDS

Queen of Heaven presents The Masturbate-A-Thon LIVE!
a benefit for The Center for Sex & Culture
When: Friday, May 2nd, 2003, 8 pm
Where: The Jon Sims Center, 1519 Mission between 11th and South Van
Ness

What: Unlike the private Masturbate-A-Thon, where people collect
pledges for charity and then masturbate privately, this event goes
from the sheets to the streets! Participants will gather in a group,
having collected pledges ahead of time some amount of money for
every minute each participant masturbates and will send in their
pledge money after
the fact. (Participants are also encouraged to pledge themselves.)
The Masturbate-A-Thon will feature separate women's and men's areas,
as well as a mixed-gender space. Participants must be 18 and over.
Prizes for most money raised and other notable Masturbate-A-Thon
accomplishments!

The Masturbate-A-Thon will be televised! (On the web, that is.) There
will be clearly-marked, separate public and private areas. Part of
the room will be seen on camera, part of it will not, so people who
do not prefer to appear live on webcam will be able to participate
too.

EVENT - "VIVE LA FRANCE"

May 3 - May 31, 2003
CLAUDE WAMPLER
"vive la france"

Opening reception: saturday, may 3, 6-8 pm

Postmasters Gallery is pleased to present "vive la france" - an
exhibition of new works by Claude Wampler. Wampler's show consists
of a series of paintings and murals, a video, and a group of objects.
In her installations technology is used to create surprising, magical
results. Continuing her exploration of the visible vs. invisible and
presence vs. absence, the artist employs lighting effects which
illuminate or disappear content, questioning the value of access and
consumption of images.

As an extension of her live performance work, Wampler is re-assigning
the task of choreography to the objects themselves resulting in a
destabilization of the traditional relationship between art and it's
audience.

Postmasters Gallery, located in Chelsea at 459 West 19th Street
(corner of 10th Avenue), is open Tuesday through Saturday 11am to 6
pm. Please contact Magdalena Sawon with questions and image requests.

PATRIOT RAID

Two weeks ago I experienced a very small taste of what hundreds of
South Asian Immigrants and US citizens of South Asian descent have
gone through since 9/11, and what thousands of others have come to
fear.

I was held, against my will, under the Patriot Act. While I
understand the need for some measure of security and precaution in
times such as these, the manner in which this detention and
interrogation took place raises serious questions about police
tactics and the
safeguarding of civil liberties in times of war.

DEFENSE AGENCY PULLS OPENBSD FUNDING

The unused portion of a grant from the Defense Advanced Research
Projects Agency to fund development of the open-source operating
system OpenBSD has been pulled for unspecified reasons.

The project's leader, Theo de Raadt, said Thursday he was informed by
email that the remaining portion of the $2.3 million grant has been
pulled. An e-mail from a professor who is managing the grant did not
provide a reason, but de Raadt said he believes the cancellation was
prompted by concerns about the money going to too many foreign
developers and to antiwar statements that de Raadt made to reporters…

WHY THE WEB WILL WIN THE CULTURE WARS FOR THE LEFT:

Cultural conservatives have a lot of worries. They fear that Grand
Theft Auto and other video games will turn their kids into crowbar-
wielding criminals, they believe that Hollywood will turn their
daughters to floozies and sons to gigolos, and they despise the
constitutional barrier between church and state as an unnecessary
evil that has estranged religious beliefs from public life and eroded
the core values of our country. Underlying all these concerns is the
overarching belief that moral relativism -- which holds that
competing claims to right and wrong cannot be judged objectively --
is making America a godless, bankrupt country, and a very dangerous
place to raise a kid.

With Southern Republicans in control of all three branches of
government, conservative barricades appear well manned. Just one
justice short of an invincibly reactionary majority on the Supreme
Court -- excluding moderate conservatives, for seven of the nine
current justices are Republican appointees -- and relentlessly
stocking the district and appellate courts with the most conservative
jurists they can find, the Republicans are pressing a deeply
reactionary social agenda. The culture wars between the religious,
traditionalist right and the liberal, pluralist left have started to
look like a rout everywhere but in the larger, coastal cities.
Conservatives are recasting communities to be more comfortable with,
if not prostrate to, received authority in the form of literalist
interpretations of religious and political texts.
That success will be short-lived. Long after the next bubble has
burst, the internet will have surpassed the hype generated by the
last one. Not by changing the way we live and work, but by impacting
the culture wars and tipping the battle decisively to the left. …

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY OF CORPORATE PERFORMANCE ARTISTS

Mission
To utilize Art in Technology to its maximum ability to make every
community a better place to live and work.

Vision
We are dedicated to building centers of Art in Technology. Via
educational programs, innovative performances and exhibitions, and
technological support for businesses, we look to create self-
sustaining enterprises that have a positive impact on their
community. By integrating with existing community technology
networks and expanding our own network, we seek to create a superior
channel for delivery of Art in Technology content and services,
thereby maximizing our ability to achieve our mission, and providing
an excellent return on investment.

Background
Across the country from Philadelphia to Seattle, mayors have invested
hundreds of millions of dollars in arts and culture to help grow
their economies and bring that elusive sense of soul and vibrancy to
their cities. And, research has shown that the way to expand
neighborhoods is not just through the creation of more office space,
but with development from the ground up, with arts, technology, and
culture as a base.

Among the creative economy's (creative-based economic clusters that
attract dynamic and diverse pools of workers) greatest strengths is
the ability to attract other businesses and jump-start neighborhood
development. Arts and culture do this by giving local economies a
sense of soul. And this is everything, given that "knowledge workers"
and "cultural creatives"—-an influential group that runs from
playwrights and museum curators to software designers and financial
analysts—-demand vibrant and dynamic settings in which they can work,
live and create.

Economic development and the digital divide go hand-in-hand for many
reasons. Communities with the tools and skills to compete in the
digital economy are at a distinct advantage over communities that
don't. In many ways, the situation in a given community can build
upon itself, for better or for worse. A community with a well-
educated, technology-literate population is more likely to attract
and sustain new businesses, and these new businesses in turn attract
more well-educated, technology-literate people into the area.
Conversely, a community that lacks reliable access to technology and
the skills to use it is less likely to attract and sustain new
businesses that could potentially serve as a catalyst to economic
prosperity. Simply put, if communities are to remain competitive in
attracting, retaining and developing businesses in today's economy,
they must develop modern telecommunications facilities and cultivate
a well-trained workforce to stay viable.

Business
CorporatePA will generate revenue by utilizing Art in Technology
Centers as reseller channels for content, technology, and services.
Content will consist of CorporatePA designed educational programs and
seminars for youths and business people. Technology will focus on
educational software, web based applications and Open Source business
software. Services will consist of Internet hosting services,
technology transfer and seminar services to business, meeting and
exhibit space rentals, and educational/curatorial services.
CorporatePA will also generate revenues by providing content,
technology, and consulting services to those non-profits with
existing media centers looking to better utilize these as Art in
Technology Centers.

Success
CorporatePA was incorporated in January 2003 and has quickly moved to
establish itself as a resource to the communities of New York City.
The company has already received contracts from the city to develop
and design education material for the New York City Department of
Health and Mental Hygiene. It has established seats on the Art and
Technology Board for the Bronx Council for the Arts. Most
importantly, it has established a strong partnership with The Point
Community Development Corporation (thepoint.org) a non-profit
organization dedicated to youth development and the cultural and
economic revitalization of the Hunts Point section of the South
Bronx. They are assisting in the process of getting grants for an
Art in Technology Center at their organization.

Keys to Success
We are value-creating talents who are leveraging relationships to
develop high-profile support from community leaders and
organizations. We are utilizing creative content that is attractive
to youth and business people. We have focused on establishing models
that allow self-sustainability of Art in Technology Centers. We are
partnering with non-profits, as capital improvement grants are
generally attainable by non-profits, but operating capital grants are
not. We are committed to building a successful model in the South
Bronx before expanding, thus building incrementally with a solid
foundation.

Marketing Plan
By building a successful model in the South Bronx, one of our
nation's poorest congressional districts, we create a good story for
newspapers and magazines about crossing the digital divide, which we
anticipate will create a surplus of positive public relations.
Leveraging such positive publicity, we should be able to establish
Art in Technology Centers in cooperation with other non-profits. We
will also establish prominence by creating and publicizing high
quality art events and performances. Already, we have received
newspaper coverage of our events that explain our services. We will
utilize extensive online and email resources to promote ourselves,
and already have established a online cultural newsletter with 1500
subscribed members and a reach of 250,000 via other lists to which we
distribute. After successfully building our first Art in Technology
at Hunts Point, we will approach existing Community Technology
Networks to provide innovative and creative content via their
distribution channels as well as our own.

Management Team
The CorporatePA management team is comprised of experienced and
dedicated professionals with expertise in a broad array of areas,
including art, small business services, technology and programming,
education, business development, marketing and communications. In
their past efforts, they have raised and earned millions of dollars
for business efforts, been honored for community involvement, and
have been selected to showcase artwork in museums and performances on
world class stages.

Investment Need
With the creation of the first Art in Technology Center being months
away, CorporatePA is supporting itself via direct sales to business
and grants for education programs for youths. Additionally, it sells
sponsorships to performances created by its team. Its philosophy is
to run operations in the black, so growth is dependent upon revenue
stream. Additional money from grants would forward progress much
quicker, but lack of such funds would not stop progress. $30,000
would facilitate consolidation of an operational space, in
partnership with The Point, to serve as a small Art in Technology
Center, which will be a prototype and test towards building a bigger
center.
