Dear REALTOKYO reader,

now that you know that we are presently working on a large-scale event, to be
held in late September, here's more good news:

A series of talk events with RT editor-in-chief Ozaki Tetsuya, titled
"REALTOKYO BAR," starts on 8/22 with a talk show featuring Dumb Type dancer
Kawaguchi Takao and producer Maeda Keizo. The conversation will be about
Dumb Type's new piece, "Voyage" (check out 'Stage' section) + related events,
and videos of previous performances will be shown.
For more info see:
http://www.realtokyo.co.jp/event_cgi/ev_viewE.cgi?0,261

Within the coming week there will be a link on RT taking you to the REALTOKYO
BAR page, where you will find information on future events introducing creative
people from Tokyo and elsewhere in Japan in captivating talk sessions.

As you see, REALTOKYO is getting more and more REAL, and we members of the
editorial team hope to meet as many of you as possible at such events, to
get in
closer touch with our readers, but also to help close the gap between those who
create things and those who appreciate them.

Stay tuned,

Andreas
Vice editor-in-chief
REALTOKYO

Vol. 043: Recycling Silent Movies

Sergei Eisenstein's "Battleship Potemkin" is a masterpiece that shines
brilliantly
from the top of silent movie's history. Many of you will surely remember
the famous
"Odessa Steps" massacre scene with the baby in the carriage tumbling down the
stairs. The enormous influence on following filmmaker generations becomes
obvious
when seeing people such as Brian De Palma quote just this scene, and Zbigniew
Rybczynski refer to it in his interesting video, titled "Steps." In its
screenings "Battleship
Potemkin" is usually accompanied by the music of Dmitrii D. Shostakovich,
but at
the end of July I witnessed an interesting new approach, undertaken at the
Athenee
Francais Cultural Center.

Vol. 005: Kurazono Keizo from "Internet Magazine"

July 27

There's something like 'private booms' people get stuck in. One day, all of
a sudden
they get caught by something that is virtually unrelated to current
fashions and
moods and, intrigued by its magic, start a collection. Since it has nothing
to do with
any fashion, naturally it's hard to get. At every shop they ask, the answer
is the same:
"I'm afraid, we don't stock that at anymore." Even in chats with friends,
they fail to
create a conversation when mentioning their recent hobby. They're excited
all by
themselves, while everything around them remains totally cool. This
'temperature
difference' is something I personally like, and that's why I'm
enthusiastically indulging
in my own booms.

(4) Event Pick of the Week

Farmers Manual [presentation & live]

Artists who are active in both sound and visual creation are not unusual
these days.
We're also used to seeing people perform in a club today, and hold a
lecture in an
art museum tomorrow. In both music and film, it's a matter of common sense that
pioneering work can't be achieved anymore without creating own, unique computer
software/applications. Farmers Manual is a young Austrian
programmer+artist+musician
four-piece that combines all these aspects, even adding to this a smart
sense of
business (the technology they developped is likely to be employed in every
second
major SF flick in the future). The list of guest artists to appear at this
event alone is
attractive, and the fact that prior to the live performance there will be a
presentation
by FM member Mathias introducing the unit's activities and (hopefully)
revealing their
means of creation, definitely earns this event the full five stars.
