A lo largo de más de 10 años, Peter Horvath ha experimentado con nuevas 
narrativas cinemáticas en Internet. Su línea de trabajo artístico es 
reconocida por la exploración temprana del video en el contexto de 
Internet que combina con las posiblidades hipertextuales, el sonido y la 
programación web.


En su primera obra, /La Guía/, de 1995, Horvath correlacionó dos medios 
masivos de comunicación: la web y la televisión. La web, en su infancia, 
demostraba su capacidad interactiva, mientras la televisión se 
encontraba en pleno auge y permitía la interacción a partir de 
seleccionar la programación. Este trabajo cuestionó en su momento, la 
relevancia del medio dándole la pauta al usuario en su significación. En 
sus primeras obras, Horvath combinaba fotos, textos, gráfica y animación 
para crear fragmentos líricos atemporales. Con el tiempo, el artista 
estableció una estética más enfocada hacia la cinematografía, al emplear 
el video como un recurso compositivo y recurriendo a detalles limpios y 
refinados en la composición de la imagen en movimiento, como en sus 
encuadres y la presentación de situaciones particulares. Al hacer uso de 
ventanas /pop-up /(las multi-capas nativas de los navegadores), Horvath 
resalta la funcionalidad narrativa de las herramientas de trabajo de la 
web. En sus continuas exploraciones, el artista presenta las capacidades 
expresivas del /net cinema/ en obras que exploran sustancialmente 
diversas condiciones humanas como el desplazamiento, la envidia, la 
soledad, el amor, la seducción, la inocencia, el miedo, la 
individualidad y la identidad. Sus trabajos son construidos en un medio 
que representa un ambiente idóneo y apegado a ciertas estructuras de 
pensamiento que le permiten dialogar sobre dichas experiencias 
relativamente subjetivas.


Tomando en cuenta que el desarrollo cinemático del siglo pasado le ha 
brindado a la humanidad una mayor capacidad de auto-percepción, Horvath 
transporta tal discurso al complejo mundo de la red. Además, se adelanta 
a la actualidad de la web 2.0, la cual es instaurada como escaparate social.


Entre las obras que se presentarán en esta retrospectiva en el Museo 
Tamayo se encuentran /Boulevard/ (2007), /Tenderly Yours/ (2005), /The 
Presence of Absence/ (2003) y /Unexpected Launching of Heavy Objects/ 
(2003).

Peter Horvath (Toronto, 1961) realiza trabajos en video, sonido, 
fotografía y nuevos medios. A los 20 años, empezó a investigar sobre 
arte basado en el tiempo, para eventualmente co-fundar 6168.org, 
buscando producir net-art en el surgimiento social de la red. Horvath ha 
exhibido su obra en instituciones y festivales como el Whitney Museum Of 
American Art, (Artport), Nueva York; 18 Stuttgarter Filmwinter, 
Stuttgart; FILE Electronic Language International Festival, Sâo Paulo; 
Video Zone International Video Art Biennial, Tel Aviv; Musée National 
des Beaux-Arts du Québec; así como en galerías en Nueva York, Tokio y 
Londres. Además, ha recibido comisiones y becas por parte de Rhizome.org 
en The New Museum, Nueva York (2005); Turbulence.org New Radio y 
Performing Arts, Boston (2004).

Over the past ten years, Peter Hovarth has experimented with new 
Internet-based forms of cinematic narrative. His work is known for its 
pioneering exploration of video in the context of the Internet, 
combining hypertext with sound and Web programming.

His first piece, /The Guide/ (1995), established a link between two mass 
media: the Web and television. Still in its infancy, the Web 
demonstrated its interactive possibilities at a time when television was 
the most prevalent medium, but one that permitted only limited 
interaction insofar as viewers could select their programming. At that 
time, this piece questioned the medium’s relevance, granting its users 
an appropriate significance in relation to it. In his first works, 
Hovarth combined photographs, texts, graphics and animation to create 
lyrical, a-temporal fragments. Over time, the artist’s aesthetic focused 
increasingly on film as he used video as a composition tool to render 
pared-down and yet detailed moving images in his framing and 
presentation of particular situations. By using pop-up windows (an 
endemic feature of the Internet’s multi-layered environment), Hovarth 
emphasizes the narrative functionality of instruments specific to the 
Web. In his continual explorations, the artist depicts the expressive 
capacities of Net Cinema in works that examine substantially diverse 
human conditions such as displacement, envy, loneliness, love, 
seduction, innocence, fear, individuality and identity. His works are 
constructed in a medium that represents an ideal setting, associated 
with certain thought structures that allow him to establish a dialogue 
with these relatively subjective experiences.

Taking into account that the development of film over the twentieth 
century has given us a certain sense of increased self-perception, 
Hovarth transfers this discourse to the complex world of the Web. He 
also addresses the topicality of the Web 2.0 as a social networking tool.

The works presented in this retrospective at the Museo Tamayo include 
/Boulevard/ (2007), /Tenderly Yours/ (2005), /The Presence of Absence/ 
(2003) and /Unexpected Launching of Heavy Objects/ (2003).
