The exhibition Locked In intends to initiate a reflection on contemporary representations of man in the context of a continuous expansion of the field of visibility. 

When speaking of visibility today,one often implies notions of exposure,denudation and intrusion.Whereas in contemporary public discourse, visibility is considered a guarantee for democratic transparency, it also serves to conceal the unconstrained implementation of surveillance techniques and the over-production of power. It is therefore both important and legitimate to investigate the ambivalent meanings and consequences of the democratization of images and the generalization of transparency.The contention of this exhibition is that contemporary art provides a powerful tool in trying to understand the complex mutations society is undergoing in the wake of these developments, to the extent that it voices precisely those aspects of reality which elude all other means of expression. 

Locked In thus proposes a different reading of reality, which takes into account that artworks act as “screens of conscience” where the truths and fears haunting the deep strata of collective consciousness appear as if under a magnifying glass. In this view, artworks are not merely accelerators of revelation and meaning but assume the ethical function of unveiling the truth 
about power strategies and practices at work within contemporary society. 

Locked In describes a collective ”syndrome” of our times – the condition of being “locked in” the visible without the possibility or desire to react and change the current state of things. At the same time, it underlines the fact that the contemporary individual has been reduced to the mere functionality of a resource, programmed both as a relay and channel between two modes of visibility and a new “medium” for disseminating messages and information. Rather than a new anthropomorphism or Renaissance, the recurrence of the human figure in contemporary discourse thus signals the paradoxical states of infra-visibility and trans-visibility, of “figurance” and “confinement in the web of the visible” expressed by the metaphor in the title of the exhibition. In reaction to the overabundance of meanings and representations, the exhibition also aims to question the sanity of the present symbolic order, highlighting today’s artists’ endeavour to reconsider
 the very notions of image and representation. 

Locked In presents a selection of 40 outstanding works by 26 artists who work in different media ranging from sculpture, painting and installation to photography and video. The works in this exhibition are centred on contemporary man, who is 
depicted as an inhabitant of different realities, an “interface to the world”, trapped between the irresistible injunction to multi-task and the need for a unified perception of the world. As archives or manifestos against the disappearance of the subtle and deliberate in our lives, they refer in various ways to this turning point in the history of mankind.

L’exposition Locked In entend initier une réflexion sur les représentations contemporaines de l’homme dans le contexte de l’expansion continuelle du champ de la visibilité.

Dans son acception contemporaine, le terme de « visibilité » sous-entend des phénomènes fortement connotés tels qu’exposition, mise à nu et intrusion. Dans le discours public actuel, la visibilité est volontiers présentée comme un garant de la transparence démocratique, alors qu’elle sert par ailleurs à camoufler la prolifération incontrôlée des dispositifs de surveillance et l’accumulation de pouvoir. Il semble dès lors important et légitime de traquer les significations et conséquences ambivalentes de la démocratisation des images et de l’état de transparence généralisée. L’exposition Locked In part du constat que l’art contemporain nous fournit les outils pour comprendre les mutations complexes de la société, parce qu’il est en mesure de dévoiler des aspects de la réalité qui se soustraient à tous les autres moyens d’expression.

Locked In propose une lecture différente de la réalité, qui considère l’oeuvre d’art comme un « écran de la conscience » sur lequel se manifestent de manière exagérée les vérités et peurs latentes qui hantent les strates profondes de la conscience collective. Dans cette vision des choses, les oeuvres d’art ne se contentent plus d’agir comme des révélateurs de significations cachées, mais assument une fonction éthique en faisant apparaître les tenants et les aboutissants des stratégies et de l’exercice du pouvoir au sein des sociétés contemporaines.

Locked In décrit un « syndrome » collectif de notre époque : le sentiment d’être « enfermé dans le visible », sans moyen ni volonté de réagir et de changer l’état des choses. L’exposition décrit un individu ravalé au rang de ressource, programmé pour fonctionner à la fois comme un relais ou communiquant entre deux modes de visibilité et un nouveau « médium » utilisé à des fins de dissémination de messages et d’informations. Plutôt qu’un nouvel anthropomorphisme ou une quelconque Renaissance, la récurrence de la figure humaine dans le discours contemporain indique alors les états paradoxaux d’infra-visibilité et de trans-visibilité, de « figurance » et d’« enchevêtrement dans le visible », une condition insinuée par la métaphore du titre de l’exposition.
En réaction à la surabondance de significations et d’images, l’exposition  entend également questionner la sanité de l’ordre
symbolique présent, soulignant l’urgence que ressentent les artistes contemporains à reconsidérer les notions mêmes d’image et de représentation.

Locked In propose une sélection de 40 oeuvres de 27 artistes travaillant dans des médias aussi divers que la sculpture, la peinture, l’installation, la photographie et la vidéo. L’homme contemporain est au centre des démarches de ces artistes, présenté comme un habitant de réalités différentes, une « interface » avec le monde, tiraillé entre l’irrésistible injonction du multitasking et le besoin d’une perception unifiée du monde. En tant qu’archives ou manifestes contre la disparition de la subtilité et de l’intentionnalité dans notre existence, ces oeuvres rendent compte dans toute leur diversité d’un tournant
décisif dans l’histoire de l’humanité.

  5 creatori romani intr-un proiect artistic international de amploare
 la Luxemburg

  Cunoscutii artisti vizuali romani Mircea Cantor, Victor Man si Victor
 Racatau, care s-au remarcat in ultima vreme printr-o febrila
 activitate expozitionala internationala,  vor face parte, in perioada
 19 aprilie-29 iunie 2008, din selectia expozitiei LOCKED IN, conceputa
 si coordonata de catre curatoarea de origine romana Maria Rus Bojan
 impreuna cu francezul Philippe Hardy.
  Proiectul este produs si gazduit de catre CASINO Luxembourg – Forum
 d'art contemporain.
  De asemenea, scriitorul si filosoful roman Bogdan Ghiu, care semneaza
 si unul dintre textele de fond din catalogul expozitiei, va sustine,
 sambata, 19 aprilie, conferinta L'avenir monstrueux de l'art. Nouveaux
 besoins, nouveau pragmatisme (Viitorul monstruos al artei. Noile
 nevoi, noul pragmatism).

  Alaturi de cei trei artisti vizuali romani, expozitia LOCKED IN
 reuneste nume de top ale artei contemporane: Carlos Amorales, Pierre
 Bismuth, Michaël Borremans, Heather & Patrick Burnett-Rose, Sebastián
 Díaz Morales, Tessa Farmer, Miklos Gaál, Douglas Gordon, Antony
 Gormley, Sagi Groner, Nanna  Hänninen, Thomas Hirschhorn, Boukje
 Janssen, Jesper Just, Melik Ohanian, Marilène Oliver, Stéphane
 Pencréac'h, Jérôme Schlomoff, Speak UP! Tanja Nellemann Poulsen &
 Grete Aagaard, Yves Trémorin, Vera Weisgerber, Guido van der Werve.

  Expozitia va fi vernisata Vineri 18 Aprilie 2008, orele 19 in
 prezenta artistilor si a celor doi curatori.

  In cadrul expozitiei LOCKED IN, artistul Mircea Cantor expune
 instalatia „Monument pentru sfarsitul lumii", recent nominalizata- de
 catre curatoarea Maria Rus Bojan-  pentru premiul Fundatiei Prince
 Pierre de Monaco, oferit anual de catre principesa Caroline de Monaco.
 Castigatorul premiului va fi anuntat in data de 6 mai la Paris.

  Victor Man, de ale carui lucrari se arata tot mai interesate unele
 dintre cele mai prestigioase muzee ale lumii, expune o instalatie
 special conceputa pentru expozitia LOCKED IN si un asamblaj compus
  dintr-o pictura si un desen pe perete, intitulat „The Maneuvrer".

  Artistul Victor Racatau va expune, un ansamblu de 5 picturi de mici
 dimensiuni care compun un expresiv „Anarhetip" vizual.

  Expozitia LOCKED IN isi propune sa initieze o ampla reflectie asupra
 reprezentarilor contemporane ale omului in contextul proliferantei
 extinderi a campului vizibilitatii. In ce fel raspund „ecranele de
 constiinta" ale artei contemporane la provocarile lansate de
 generalizarea supravegherii tehnologice, a transparentei democratice,
 a democratizarii accesului la imagine si a manipulabilitatii imaginii?

  LOCKED IN este numele generic al celui mai raspandit „sindrom"
 colectiv actual: faptul de a ne afla „blocati", „inchisi" in vizibil,
 prizonieri ai vizibilului omniprezent. Este omul contemporan un actor
 sau doar un figurant al noii dominatii a vizibilului?  Care sunt
 conceptele cele mai potrivite pentru a descrie noua situatie
 hiper-vizuala a omului: infra-vizibilitate sau trans-vizibilitate? In
 ce fel reconsidera artistii contemporan notiunile traditionale de
 imagine si de reprezentare?

  Expozitia LOCKED IN prezinta o selectie reprezentativa de 40 de
 lucrari semnate de catre 26 artisti contemporani din Franta, Romania,
 Elvetia, Anglia, Olanda, Belgia, Danemarca, Finlanda, Noua Zeelanda,
 Mexic, Israel, Argentina si Luxembourg.

  Proiectul a fost realizat cu sprijinul: Mondriaan Foundation,
 Institutul Cultural Roman, The Danish Arts Council, Finnish Fund for
 Art Exchange (FRAME), Centre Culturel Français de Luxembourg, Cultures
 France, Pro Helvetia.
