Vol. 110: Art and Social Responsibility 2
by Ozaki Tetsuya

A few more notes about my thoughts in Spain (and Germany).
Through the courtesy of the Spanish Tourist Office, after ARCO I
was able to travel to Gasteiz (Vitoria), Donostia (San Sebastian)
and Bilbo (Bilbao). In Vitoria I visited the "Artium, Centro-
Museo Vasco de Arte Contemporaneo" and the Catedral de Santa
Maria that is currently being refurbished/reconstructed, and in
San Sebastian I went for a stroll in a beautiful memorial garden
sculptor Eduardo Chillida designed toward the end of his life in
the 16th century. In Bilbao it was, of course, the Guggenheim
Bilbao. It was a wonderful trip, but that's not what I want to
write about here.

Mystery of Beauty

This is a collaboration between the architecturally impressive,
castle-like Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design in
Halle, Germany, and Matsushita Electric Works, the headquarters
of which are located in an equally impressive highrise building
in Tokyo. While German industrial design is primarily known for
emphasizing a product's solid quality, this time students of the
university present to the electric-appliance maker design concepts
on the theme "beauty". Exhibited for a month at Matsushita's
showroom are eleven results including suggestions for lighting
and home appliance designs. It will be interesting to see what
came out of this approach on a global topic from two different
local perspectives.

Kamirobo Expo 2005

A robot made out of cardboard boxes and wires, nicknamed
"kamirobo"... Sculptor Yasui Tomohiro has been devoting himself
to the creation of more than 200 kamirobos in 27 years, and the
crank, errr, crack keeps entertaining himself with "kamirobo
wrestling" and other games. Introducing in mountains of videos
and other material the production style and the plastic art
involved in the making of kamirobos, this exhibition is an
opportunity to catch a glimpse of an ultimate otaku world.
Reactions will probably vary between weariness and adulation of
Yasui's queer worldview, but the well-trained deftness of his
fingers when moving the robots is definitely amazing.
