Vol. 100: Redesigning Tokyo
by Ozaki Tetsuya

RT rececently featured a set of conversations on the theme
"Redesigning Tokyo", recorded during a series of events of the
same title hosted by Kuwasawa Design School. Functioning as the
talk sessions' moderator, I had the chance to talk to architect
Mark Dytham, architect/editor Baba Masataka, NADiff director
Ashino Kimiaki, BBS site "2-channel" webmaster (Nishimura) Hiroyuki,
and planning director and "working method researcher" Nishimura
Yoshiaki. I'd like to use this occasion to give a brief summary of
my five guests' statements, and hope that this will prompt you to
visit the respective pages and read all of their interesting comments.

Goto Shigeo ("Tokyo Gathering") Vol. 013

I wonder why so many people intend to become artists, but only
few of them really do... That of couse is a question that is
not easy to answer, as the matter is a complex one. The ability
to create powerful works of art alone and independently has to
do with how an artist is linked with the social system and
subliminal awareness. While this applies to artists of all
generations, we're living in an age where it seems impossible
for individual artists to give the amorphos value that is art
distributable and comunicable shape. Artists need strategies of
self-production, but calculated works of art are only valuable
for a short time.

(3) Event Pick of the Week

Tanaami Keiichi: Ascension Furniture + Phantasy City

Red, blue, yellow, green, and black... There's an abundance of
psychedelic colors in the objects lined up at this exhibition,
including lamps of distinctly phallic shapes, and a sofa bearing
voluptuous curves that produce an unexpectedly strong sensation
of texture. Welcome to Tanaami World, a mysteriously flamboyant
diorama of a city drawn by a megalomaniac. On the other side, the
pieces of furniture are based on sketches Tanaami made in the
1980s, realized for this exhibition by the Graf collective. They
are also responsible for the exhibition space's composition, but
the low-key job they did here is a bit disappointing. A slightly
more down-and-dirty approach would have earned the event five stars.
