Baba Masataka ("A") Vol. 017

I went to Hakodate, a place with the same kind of air. I was
invited by Watanabe Yasushi, the author of "Joho Design Nyumon"
(Introduction to Information Design), to participate in a
project he initiated. Hakodate is a beautiful place with a
history as a harbor town of almost 150 years, and this culture
is still very much alive in historical buildings and the "travel"
feel particular to such places. Quite a few novels and movies
actually play here. But just like in comparable provincial cities
throughout the country, the population of Hakodate is both
decreasing and aging, which ultimately results in industrial
decline, an increasing number of empty buildings and property,
and many other problems.

Kawaguchi Takao: D.D.D.

A member of the internationally renowed artist collective "Dumb
Type", Kawaguchi Takao has shown in recent years a number of
ambitious solo performances. This time he appears in a session
with (voice) performer and khoomei singer Yamakawa Fuyuki! Here
Kawaguchi finds himself treated by Yamakawa on a laboratory table,
with avant-garde singing, guitar play, and a number of medical
instruments that transform Kawaguchi's heartbeat into sounds and
lights. Coming across as an exciting audio-visual installation,
this "physical performing arts show" kind of event crosses the
borders between dance, music and art, to form a whole new genre.
