EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR -- Inuvik -- The Great Northern Arts Society

Job Description:
The Great Northern Arts Society is seeking an Executive Director to
provide leadership for the organization. The Executive Director works
with and is responsible to the volunteer Board of Directors and the
Society members, to support and nourish Artists and the Arts in
Northern Canada. The Society also presents the annual Great Northern
Arts Festival, Canada’s premier festival of Northern Arts. The
Executive Director is responsible for the fundraising, budgeting and
reporting for this event, as well as the other activities the Society
undertakes to fulfil its mandate. The Board of Directors, elected by
the membership, guides the policy direction for the organization. The
Executive Director reports directly to the Chair of the Board.
Duties:
* Provide vision, leadership & direction for the Society & cultural
community
* Contribute to the Society’s strategic plan & organizational
development
* Advocate & Lobby for Artists & the Arts in Northern Canada (NWT,
Yukon, and Nunavut with a focus on the NWT)
* Financial administration & venue management
* Prepare budgets & work plans
* Government & Education liaison with departments at all three levels
* Responsible for fundraising & promotion
* Public relations & dealing effectively with the media
* Network & build partnerships
* Develop a strong membership
* Hire & supervise staff
* Assist staff in setting & achieving performance goals
* Represent the Society on boards & committees
* Report to the Board
Qualifications: The successful candidate must have the following skills
& abilities.
The successful candidate will possess: a respect and passion for the
arts, an ability to articulate and understand the importance of
"vision" in the work of the Society, an ability to pull together people
and resources to support a common cause, an understanding of current
cultural policy issues, the ability to liaise successfully with the
Board and Society members and lead discussion, top-notch
time-management skills, an ability to follow through on ideas and get
the work done, an independent creative nature that can work both
independently and stimulate teamwork. The Selection Committee will be
assessing potential candidates for an activist orientation, for
superior writing and communication skills, financial and analytical
abilities. The candidate will possess a post-secondary degree (or
work-related equivalent), additional experience in Arts Administration
is a definite asset. Fluency in English is required; fluency in
additional languages, especially one of the languages indigenous to the
NWT is an asset. The Society’s busy agenda requires flexibility,
willingness to work irregular hours, and the ability to handle several
complex tasks at one time.
