Videos und Abstracts der Konferenz "Migrating Images - Bilder
transkulturell lesen und übersetzen" stehen ab sofort in der Mediathek

"Ein nicht endender Strom uns täglich neu umgebender Bilder - in
Alltagskultur, Film, bildender Kunst - hat zu einer exponentiellen
Erweiterung des Bilderkosmos geführt. Bilder sind - gerade auch im
'visuellen Zeitalter' - trotz ihrer scheinbar unmittelbaren
Zugänglichkeit für die Betrachter aus verschiedenen Kulturkreisen nicht
gleichermaßen verständlich und bedürfen der Übersetzung."

Die Konferenz "Migrating Images" untersuchte die kulturellen
Rahmenbedingungen, unter denen Bilder heute produziert, präsentiert,
gelesen und übersetzt werden. Es referierten und diskutierten am 07. und
08. November 2003 im Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin,
Kunstwissenschaftler, Kuratoren, Kunst- und Medienwissenschaftler.

"Migrating Images"


Videos and abstracts of the conference "Migrating Images - Reading and
Translating Images Transculturally" are now available online:

"The never-ending stream of images engulfing us - from everyday culture,
film, and the graphic arts - have exploded the boundaries marking our
former visual worlds globally. Even in the 'age of visuality' and
despite the immediacy images have for the viewer, they are neither
equally accessible across different cultures, nor similarly read, and
need to be translated. The conference examines the conditions under
which these images are produced and decoded. What do the images tell us
about these conditions? To what extent do the images demand translation
from the viewer, to what extent are the translations already integrated
in the images, making them intelligible in other cultures as well?"

Taking various media and genres as an impetus, "Migrating Images" offers
insights into the debate on the role of the cultural surround and in how
images are perceived and read, and asks what can be expected from new
interdisciplinary approaches in understanding non-European cultural
artefacts. The conference took place at the House of the World Cultures,
Berlin, from 7th-8th November 2003 and includes contributions by
curators, artists, sociologists, art and media theorists.
