If the true history of modern Romania is ever written,
it should be prefaced by these words: "Romania? seduced, ruined, abandoned"
Romania was seduced by the west in the 1960's and 1970's, ruined in the 1980's
by the same west, and abandoned in the 1990's.

The story should mention the forgotten 1960's and 70's when the west opened its checkbooks
to Romania, extending favorable loans at favorable rates; opened its markets to Romanian goods,
and provided technology transfer; gave her diplomatic prominence (Romania held the
UN Security Council presidency in the 1960's, facilitated the Israeli-Egypt negotiations,
and played a role in Nixon's watershed visit to China); and gave her cultural and sports 
achievements top billing on the world stage.

This was followed by the ugly 1980's, when the west cut off Romania from credits,
despite her being the world's _only example of full debt repayment (you know those debts 
you paid with "nu nea lasat sa ne distram" - life = full of ironies); cut her off
from the world markets, from energy imports, and from diplomatic recognition,
and then sanctioned the political crime committed against its president.

By the 1990's, international credits were frozen, the press turned negative,
and diplomatically Romania was reduced to a pariah status; her initiatives met
with nothing but political demagoguery, absurd demands and invented crisis.

Romania has always stood at a crossroads. Today it is a two state nation,
divided between the Russian military bases in Moldova and the occident induced
chaos in the rest of the country.
