1. Terugblik op het 20e World Wide Video Festival 2003
-------------------------------------------------
Op 25 mei werd de jubileumeditie van het World Wide Video Festival succesvol
afgesloten. 20 jaar World Wide werd onder andere gevierd met een grote
overzichttentoonstelling die inzicht gaf in de belangrijkste ontwikkelingen
van de mediakunst van de afgelopen twee decennia. Het Festival werd goed
bezocht door zowel het publiek als de deelnemende kunstenaars. Een groot
aantal bezoekers bezochten de solo- en overzichtstentoonstellingen, de
live VJ-performances tijdens de driedaagse slotmanifestatie 'RGB', de
zaalvoorstellingen in het Auditorium en de World Wide Media Lounge. Tachtig
van de deelnemende kunstenaars waren persoonlijk aanwezig op het festival
om hun werk toe te lichten in het meet-the-artist programma.
Het is ons goed bevallen op de nieuwe hoofdlocatie, de Passenger Terminal
Amsterdam. In dit markante en transparante gebouw van glas en staal aan de
oever van het IJ vond het overgrote deel van de activiteiten van het
Festival plaats. Deze concentratie van events droeg bij aan het slagen van
het festival.
Het World Wide bedankt het publiek, de gasten, de kunstenaars en de vele
medewerkers die het World Wide video Festival 2003 tot een energiek en
stimulerend evenement maakten.
De catalogus van het festival is verschenen op CD-ROM en heeft links naar de
festival website waar aanvullen beeld en geluidsmateriaal, gemaakt tijdens

2. Data 21e World Wide Video Festival 2004
-------------------------------------------------
De volgende editie van het World Wide Video Festival vindt plaats van 13 t/m
23 mei 2004. De Passenger Terminal Amsterdam wordt wederom de hoofdlocatie
van het Festival. Het Festival duurt iets korter - 10 dagen - daar staat
tegenover dat de Passenger Terminal dagelijks geopend zal zijn tot 1 uur 's
nachts! De voorbereidingen voor het programma zijn in volle gang. Extra
aandacht zal gedurende deze editie van het festival worden gegeven aan de
ontwikkelingen van de mediakunst in Oost-Europa. Meer informatie over het

3. Inschrijven voor het 21e festival
-------------------------------------------------
Kunstenaars die single-screen produkties (video, DVD, net-art, CD-ROM)
willen inzenden om in aanmerking te komen voor presentatie op de 21e editie
van het World Wide Video Festival in 2004 kunnen hiervoor gebruik maken van
het on-line inschrijfformulier.
Het festival geeft de komende edities prioriteit aan thematisch
georiënteerde tentoonstellingen, solopresentaties en speciale projecten.
Vanwege deze inhoudelijke koerswijziging die het Festival heeft ingezet met
ingang van de laatste edities is het niet langer mogelijk om voorstellen in
te sturen voor de categorieën installatie en performance. We zouden teveel
kunstenaars teleur moeten stellen omdat er geen ruimte is voor de
presentatie van hun werk binnen het festival. Wel kunnen er single-screen
produkties (video, DVD, CD-ROM, net-art) worden ingezonden. Een selectie
uit deze inzendingen zal worden vertoond in het Auditorium en in de World
Wide Media Lounge.

4. World Wide activiteiten in het buitenland
-------------------------------------------------
Naast de hoofdactiviteit, het jaarlijkse festival, ontwikkelt het World Wide
Video Festival een aantal activiteiten in het buitenland. Er zijn vergaande
plannen om een editie van het World Wide Video Festival te realiseren in de
Triennale di Milano in Italië in oktober 2004. De installatie 'Video' van
Ivan Esquivel Naito; net-art en videotapes van Iv?n Lozano, Angie Bonino en
Diego Lama werden tentoongesteld tijdens het 7e ATA festival 2003 in Lima,
Peru. De solotentoonstelling van Eder Santos was in de maand juli te zien in
Brazilië in het Pal?cio das Artes in Belo Horizonte en de door het festival
geproduceerde installatie Encyclopedia of Ignorance zal tijdens Videobrasil
te zien in Galeria Brito Cimino te Sao Paulo. Voorts zal een selectie van
werk van het afgelopen festival te zien zijn bij VideoLisboa 2003 in
Lissabon en in Centre d'Art Contemporain
Basse-Normandie, WHARF in Hérouville Saint-Clair, Frankrijk. De
interdisciplinaire productie 'Hamlet Machine' van Dominik Barbier die zijn
wereldpremière beleefde als prelude op het World Wide Video festival in
maart jongstleden werd met veel succes vertoond in het Système Friche
Théâtre in Marseille.

5. 'The way of the weed' te zien tijdens Club Cinema
-------------------------------------------------
Club Cinema vertoont bijzondere en experimentele films in een club context.
Op zaterdag 20 september om 22 uur is de film 'The Way of the Weed' van
Anne Quirynen, An-Marie Lambrechts & Peter Missotten te zien in Amuse
Theater, Amsterdam.
In het jaar 7079 wordt de onderzoeker Thomas gedropt in een woestijn om het
levenswerk van de obscure wetenschapper William F. (William Forsythe) te
onderzoeken. In de catacomben van het ondergrondse laboratorium stuit
Thomas op een team van plantenonderzoekers die in comateuze toestand zijn
opgeslagen in bassins gevuld met water. Thomas wordt letterlijk opgeslokt
door dit mysterie en komt in contact met een 'wetenschap' die veel ouder is
dan de wetenschap die hij dacht te beoefenen.
Club Cinema is een initiatief van Electronation in samenwerking met het
World Wide Video Festival. Na de film een Electronation party met een
optreden van Alexander Robotnick - de koning van de italo disco uit de jaren
'80 - en anderen.

1. Review of the 20th World Wide Video Festival 2003

The jubilee edition of the World Wide Video Festival came to a successful
conclusion on 25 May. Twenty years of World Wide was celebrated with, among
other things, a comprehensive retrospective exhibition which provided
insight into the most important developments in media art over the last two
decades. The festival was well attended by both the public and the
participating artists. Many visitors saw the solo and retrospective
exhibitions, the live VJ-performances during the three-day closing
manifestation 'RGB', the screenings in the Auditorium and those in the
World Wide Media Lounge. Eighty of the participating artists were present in
person to take part in the meet-the-artist programme.
We were very pleased with our new main location, Passenger Terminal
Amsterdam. Most of the festival activities were held in this striking,
transparent building made of glass and steel on the shore of the IJ. The
concentration of events at one location contributed to the festival's
success.
World Wide thanks the public, the guests, the artists and the many staff
members who made the World Wide Video Festival 2003 a dynamic and
stimulating event.
The festival catalogue is now available on CD-ROM and has links to the
festival website where additional audio and visual material made during the
festival, can be seen and heard. The catalogue can be ordered at:

2. Data 21st World Wide Video Festival 2004
-------------------------------------------------
The next edition of the World Wide Video Festival will be held from 13 - 23
May 2004. Passenger Terminal Amsterdam will once again be the festival's
main location. The Passenger Terminal will be open daily from 11 a.m. until
1 a.m. in the morning. Preparations for the programme are well under way.
Extra attention will be given to the developments in media art in eastern
Europe. You will find more information about the coming festival in our
next newsletter.

3. Call for submissions
-------------------------------------------------
Artists interested in participating in the selection for single-screen
productions (video, DVD, net art, CD-ROM) for the 21st edition of the World
Wide Video Festival in 2004 can use the on-line entry form.
The festival's coming editions give priority to: thematically oriented
exhibitions, solo presentations and special projects. This development
introduced in the previous editions of the festival means that it is no
longer possible to submit proposals for the categories: installation and
performance. We would have to disappoint too many artists, as there is not
sufficient space for the presentation of their work. Single-screen
productions however can be submitted. A selection of these entries will be
compiled into a programme to be displayed in the Auditorium and in the
World Wide Media Lounge.

4. World Wide activities abroad

In addition to the main activity, the yearly festival, the World Wide Video
Festival is developing a number of activities abroad. There are
far-reaching plans to arrange an edition of the World Wide Video Festival in
the Triennale di Milano in Italy in October 2004. The installation 'Video'
by Ivan Esquivel Naito; net art and videotapes by Iv?n Lozano, Angie Bonino
and Diego Lama were exhibited during the 7th ATA festival 2003 in Lima,
Peru. Eder Santos' solo exhibition was on show in July in Brazil in the
Pal?cio das Artes in Belo Horizonte and the installation Encyclopedia of
Ignorance, produced by the festival, will be on view during Videobrasil in
Galeria Brito Cimino in Sao Paulo.
Furthermore, a selection of work from the last festival will be at
VideoLisboa 2003 in Lisbon and in Centre d'Art Contemporain
Basse-Normandie, WHARF in Hérouville Saint-Clair, France. The
interdisciplinary production 'Hamlet Machine' by Dominik Barbier which had
its world premiere as prelude to the World Wide Video Festival in March was
a big success in the Système Friche Théâtre in Marseilles.

5. 'The way of the weed' screening at Club Cinema
-------------------------------------------------
Club Cinema screens unique and experimental films in a club context. On
Saturday 20 September at 22.00 the film 'The Way of the Weed' by Anne
Quirynen, An-Marie Lambrechts & Peter Missotten is being screened in Amuse
Theater, Amsterdam.
In the year 7079 the researcher Thomas is dropped in a desert to research
the life's work of the obscure scientist William F. (William Forsythe). In
the catacombs of the underground laboratory Thomas chances upon a team of
plant researchers in a comatose state who have been stored in tanks filled
with water. Thomas is literally engulfed by this mystery and comes in
contact with a 'science' that is much older than what he had expected to
study.
Club Cinema is an initiative of Electronation in association with the World
Wide Video Festival. After the film there is an Electronation party with a
performance by Alexander Robotnick - the king of Italian disco from the
eighties - and others.
