Recycling/redesigning the Nihonbashi-Kanda area
Tokyo Designers' Block -- Central East
by Tajima Noriyuki

Tokyo doesn't seem to find out of the economic slump. Using more
than 20 empty buildings and floors in the Kanda/Bakuro-cho/Higashi-
nihonbashi/Nihonbashi/Ningyucho/Hacchobori area as venues for
events happening between November 7 and 16, the "Tokyo Designers'
Block -- Central East" (TDB-CE) presents a new approach as an
attempt to make the best out of the situation. Featuring over 50
artists, designers and architects, the spectacle aims to cut a
bridge between art, design, and the city of Tokyo. Baba Masataka
writes about TDB-CE in the latest entry in his "Tokyo Editors'
Diary" in REALTOKYO (English version coming in early November),
so please check that for more details. TDB-CE is at once an
experimental event and a new form of "town planning."

(2) Event Pick of the Week

The Peter Saville Show

From London to Tokyo comes the huge Peter Saville retrospective.
It's a rare opportunity to view at once the designer's whole
career, leading from the launch of Factory Records in the late
'70s via design work including album cover art for Joy Division,
Suede, and more, to his collaborations with the likes of Yamamoto
Yoji or RAF SIMONS. In each of his works, Saville's refined sense
becomes evident in his distinguished use of colors and typography.
By the way, the soundtrack New Order made exclusively for this
exhibition was sold out right on the event's first day, but another
100 copies will be available on November 1, so that's the day
you'll have to pay a visit to Laforet.
