about mapping, there is (it seems, open statistical) data
on every country via the CIA world fact book, which has
several 'key' indicators which may be relevant to creating
maps on a country or regional basis. i believe the data
is such as: phones per 1,000 people, computers per 1,000
and so on, with internet statistics probably now added with
telecommunications (how many TV stations, and that this
is a reflection of the health of the society, along with how
it is owned and operated). in any case, if this raw data was
put into a spreadsheet form with someone who knew how
to batch process the data, it could be used to output graphs
(visualizations) and possibly maps&graphs of such data.
there are also powerline maps somewhere online, either
through power company online news, government data,
or other data (possibly EU/UN, etc). this would allow for
a structural look. for any interested in maps, there is the
great site 'odden's bookmarks' to look at what is available,
and there are free custom online mapping services that
may have the ability to do infrastructures via census data,
or if someone is in a geography lab or is using GRASS,
there is probably a lot compiled already via GIS datasets.
