Ziga Kariz: TERROR=DECOR: ART NOW
Inauguration of the Slovenian Pavilion at the 50th Venice Biennial 2003.

You are kindly invited to attend the official opening of the exhibition
TERROR=DECOR: ART NOW which will be held at the Slovenian Pavilion at the
50th Venice Biennial 2003. Please join us on Friday, June 13 2003 at 8 p.m.
at the A+A Gallery, Calle Malipiero 3073, Venice.

Drinks and buffet dinner will be provided at the Corte dell Duca Sforza
square in the immediate vicinity of the pavilion.

The new project by Ziga Kariz and collaborators, developed for the Venice
Biennial, is part of a series entitled TERROR=DECOR that began in 1997. The
TERROR=DECOR: ART NOW project establishes the relation between the violence
of extreme forms of socio-political struggles and artistic avant-garde
movements, and the popular visual culture as a possible field of the
commodification of this kind of attacks. The project is being developed in
line with two parallel artistic principles: one unfolds at the surface of
the painting/object, while the other develops in the complex mise-en-scene
of installation and management of the objects in the urban fabric of the city.
The forms of objects comprise visual codes of the past and present
socio-political and artistic utopias, filtered through the machinery of the
commodification and domestication of contemporary cultural production. In
the process of commodification, which flattens the violent act into sheer
spectacle, the critical charge of the visual is neutralized and adapted to
enter, or place itself, into the elitist surroundings of consumer society
decorated precisely with the once problematic visual material. During the
intervention or installation of objects in the selected apartments in
Venice the pavilion will host a team of "gaze supervisors" who will control
the interactive network spread between the objects and the Slovenian
Pavilion and make sure that everything that is being seen by the
paintings/objects placed in the apartments can also be seen in the pavilion.
