Last month, on the screenburn group list, Joseph McElroy suggested a
group of artists take pieces of a sketch of his and, independently,
work the sketch into a hypermedia work. These works would be put
together on one page to form the sketch. And these works form this
work, which is the first hypermedia collaboration to come from this

NOMAD UPDATE

We visited the New York Botantical Garden, of course in The Bronx,
for the kick off celebration of Bronx Week. Our friends, Bill & Lia
joined us for a day of picnicking & music & entertainment with our
fellow Bronxites. Our photos include Joseph, winner of the rose
raffle. A raffle was held for the 2004 selection of hybrid tea roses
& the winner, Joseph McElroy, is now the proud owner of Memorial Day,
the 2004 selected winner of the Peggy Roosevelt Rose Garden
competition. Joseph & I are having a great time caring for our new
pet rose. Cultivating it in a clay pot, feeding it rose food, &
making sure it gets adequate water. See our photos of the day at:
http://www.electrichands.com/flowers/botanical_garden_june_14_2002/
And stay tuned for more updates as we grow our pet.

The New York Botanical Garden is a 250-acre estate including tree &
shrub collections, specialized gardens and conservatory collections
of tropical and subtropical plants. One of the oldest and largest
botanical gardens in the world, The New York Botanical Garden in the
Bronx is a museum of plants and a National Historic Landmark

"In the Absence of Recombination" proposes an analysis of the new
art being created in Mexico. By presenting the work of five Mexican
artists, the exhibition attempts to investigate the strategies
artists use to produce and distribute their work. These tactics
encompass appropriations, an obsessive interest in archiving everyday
life, site-specific interventions and the use of mass-produced
materials. These new creators, all of them in their 30's, produce
their work based on their assimilation of history and their
familiarity with 'language' and new technologies.

The program is not tied to specific themes. It responds more to the
different approaches and concerns that Mexican artists have today and
how they are represented through this medium.

FIVE OPERAS - ONLINE

http://www.somedancersandmusicians.com/5operas.html

Five `Small but Perfectly Formed' Operas for the Internet

In November 2002 Michael Szpakowski, a British composer and new media
artist (http://www.somedancersandmusicians.com/michael.html), put out
a call on the internet for opera libretti, exactly 100 words in
length.

Fifty-one people replied – their work can be seen at
http://www.somedancersandmusicians.com/operaCall/pieces.html

>From these 51 pieces Michael chose five for development in this Arts
Council and Epping Forest District Council funded project.

Four of the librettists are form the USA and one from the UK.

The subject matter of the pieces varies enormously:

Rob L Roth and Carletta Joy Walker create a hymn to the edible berry
in "Smart and Tart Juicing", Lewis Lacook's "Trickle Song" is a
strange love song between cup and water, in "Woodland Teratology"
Bruce Conkle investigates the Sasquatch legend and in "East Wind"
Gordon Phillips adapts a painting by one of the Ashington Group –
working class painters active in Northumberland in the 1930s. Finally
Zack Sims creates a surreal world in which George Washington, a fox
and a hen, muse, play and bicker in "A Short Essay on Imaginary
Solitude (With George Washington)"

In January 2003 Michael set these five pieces to music and then
rehearsed intensively through February and March with a group of
singing students from Epping Forest College as principals and a
chorus consisting of year 5 students from Chipping Ongar Primary
School.

Far from being a tokenistic "outreach" project this work made serious
demands on all the participants, which they passed with flying
colors. Since the musical performances were recorded Michael has been
working intensively to create accompanying visuals. The result is
five small but perfectly formed operas of between 1 and 3 minutes in
length delivered through the Internet.

EYEBEAM PRESENTS ROBOT: A FOUR DAY FESTIVAL OF ROBOTIC TALENT,
WORKSHOPS, AND PRESENTATIONS

Saturday, July 12 thru Tuesday, July 15, 2003

New York, NY, June 5, 2003‹Eyebeam, the not-for-profit organization
dedicated to art and technology, will host ROBOT, a four-day festival
featuring a robotic talent show, exhibition, workshops,
presentations, party
and massage parlor. ROBOT will take place from July 12 15, 12-6pm
daily at
Eyebeam¹s Chelsea facility located at 540 West 21st Street between
10th and
11th Avenues. The four-day event will examine current applications of
robotic technologies on creative practices, activism, consumerism and
physical intimacy. Eyebeam will conclude the event July 15 with a
party
from 6-10pm featuring music by DJ-I ROBOT, the first random-access,
fully
analog robotic DJ. All events are open to the public free of charge
with a
suggested donation.

… Tuesday, July 15
12-6pm Tickle Salon and select Robot Talent Show participants on view
6-10pm Artist Presentations and After-Party

Tickle Salon
Eyebeam is pleased to host the U.S. premiere of the Tickle Salon at
ROBOT.
The Tickle Salon, by Dutch artists Erwin Driessens and Maria
Verstappen, is
a robotic installation based on the concept of automated stroking. The
massaging machine is designed to stroke with untiring attention and
subtleness, uniting the artists¹ interests in "meta creativity,
biology and
artificial intelligence, and of course the pleasure of being
stroked." The
Tickle Salon will be in operation throughout the run of ROBOT and
attendees
will be able to enjoy a private massage on a first-come, first-serve
basis.

ArtBots: The Robot Talent Show
Featuring the work of 23 artists and groups from six countries, the
show is
a hybrid combining aspects of both a juried art exhibition and a
traditional
talent show. Participants include robots that draw, paint, sculpt,
sing,
dance, and play musical instruments. In keeping with the "Robot
Talent Show"
theme, attendees will be invited to vote for their favorite ArtBot.
Two
awards will be presented at the end of the show: The Audience Choice
Award
and The Robot's Choice Award (artists vote for their favorite
ArtBots).
Artbots is curated and produced this year by Douglas Repetto, Philip
Galanter, and Jenny Lee and selected works from the competition will
be
installed at Eyebeam during the remainder of the ROBOT festival. For
more
information on Artbots and a list of participating artists and their
projects please visit www.artbots.org/2003.

Workshops
Mindstorms Workshop This workshop, intended for ages 12 and up, will
teach
participants of all ages how to build and program their own robots
using
LEGO Mindstorms (small computers with programmable behaviors) in
order to
address a specific challenge. Participants will work with an artist
to learn
the Mindstorm programming language, experiment with the design of a
physical
computing project, and test the results in their own mini-
robot "runway
show".

Feral Robotic Dogs Workshop The arts collective Bureau of Inverse
Technology will lead a workshop on building feral robotic dogs. These
semi-autonomous activist robots are created by disassembling and
rebuilding
commercially available robotic toy dogs. The toys are Œupgraded¹ by
installing a new nose (data collection sensors), a new brain that
programs
the dogs to "sniff out" contaminants in the environment and by
mechanically
improving them so that they can traverse outdoor terrain.

Both workshops are open to 20 participants on a first-come, first-
serve
basis.

Artist Presentations and After-Party
Please join Eyebeam¹s Director of Research & Development, Jonah
Peretti, as
he moderates a panel discussion and series of presentations examining
ways
in which artificial intelligence impacts contemporary society and
creative
practice. Participants will include Artbots director Douglas Repetto,
Natalie Jeremijenko from the Bureau of Inverse Technology, Tickle
Salon
creators Erwin Driessens and Maria Verstappen, Chico MacMurtrie of
Amorphic
Robot Works and Chris Csikszentmihalyi of the MIT Media Lab.
Immediately
following the presentations a performance by Csikszentmihalyi¹s
amazing
robotic DJ-I ROBOT will kick off a party celebrating the event.

ROBOT is Eyebeam¹s second annual summer event combining exhibitions,
demonstrations and workshops intended to encourage audience
participation,
open discourse and creative practice with technology and the arts. We
Love
New York: Mapping Manhattan with Artists and Activists, held in August
2002, examined wireless and surveillance technologies which pervade
public
spaces. We Love New York featured the worldwide launch of the
wireless game
Noderunner, recent recipient of the 2003 Ars Electronica Golden Nica
Award.

Eyebeam is located on 540 W. 21st Street between 10th & 11th Avenues.

MASS WORLDWIDE PROTEST DURING THE REPUBLICAN CONVENTION IN NEW YORK
CITY:
SUNDAY, AUGUST 29, 2004

In the last three years, George W. Bush has presided over a radical
right-wing takeover of the U.S. government whose ramifications have
been felt all over the world. Not only has he waged two wars, killing
thousands of innocent people, during his short time in office, but he
has also implemented a policy of pre-emptive war that violates
international law and threatens global security. On the home front,
unemployment soars, the federal budget deficit swells into the
billions, and states prepare to slash funding for everything from
healthcare to education, yet Bush responded with two huge tax cut
that will primarily benefit the wealthy rather than the people who
are most in need.

On every issue - from environmental regulations and international
treaty participation to worker rights, civil rights and civil
liberties - George W. Bush has pushed for unprecedented and
destructive changes in U.S. foreign and domestic policy that even
more sharply favor corporations and the wealthy, especially Bush
Administration supporters at the expense of the people of the world
and our environment.

Meanwhile, the Bush Administration shamelessly uses the tragic
attacks of September 11, 2001 to justify its aggressive and
militaristic policies. In
its most recent attempt to exploit the grief and fear that were
provoked after September 11, the Republican Party pushed back its
2004 convention to August 28 - September 2, 2004 and will hold it in
New York City, not far from Ground Zero.

SAVE THE DATE: ON AUGUST 29, 2004, THE WORLD SAYS NO TO BUSH

On February 15, 2003, millions of people all over the world took to
the streets in protest with the message The World Says No to War. On
August 29, 2004, we will come together in New York City and in cities
throughout the world to say The World Says No to Bush!

We are also organizing a protest for Thursday, Sept. 2, 2004, the day
of Bush's official selection as the presidential candidate of the
Republican Party.

Initiated by United for Peace and Justice
(http://www.unitedforpeace.org), a U.S. anti-war coalition with more
than 600 member groups. UFPJ looks forward to working with many other
organizations on this day of protest, so please
contact us at info at unitedforpeace.org if your group wants to work
collaboratively on these actions and to let us know about other
actions being planned to coincide with the Republican Convention.

THESE TWO NOW STARVE FOR SKY - LEWIS LACOOK

Stinging these chemicals from my eyes
with such soft hopes as wasps leave
in pumice and syrup trails, grinding light
until I can see clear through noon. Oh,

I do love you, packed in your new needed
shell, but I'm lonely for you, stitching
your words which you believe with
assumed large hands, jewel-eyed

clear through me to rotting cave. I struggle
to stand in this room, the dead and
passed still fucking me; you too

escape growing around this route. There are
two of them trapped between the screen and
window, and I'm too afraid to let them in.
