Documentation of the film<lokal>art project, a co-operation between
the 49th International Short Film Festival Oberhausen (May 1-6 Mai 2003)
and Siemens Arts Program

The 49th International Short Film Festival Oberhausen and Siemens Arts 
Program invited five international artists to each develop an installation 
expressly for one of the film festival's movie theatres as part of the 
special re<local>ization program in the festival city from May 1 to May 6, 
2003. The artists were: Costa Vece, Thomas Steffl, Albert Weis, Markus 
Schinwald and Dominique Gonzalez Foerster.

With the film<lokal> art project, the two organisers ventured together into 
hitherto unexplored territory. Beyond the traditional discourse about the 
various influences which art and cinema exert upon each other, the primary 
interest here was placed on the importance of the concrete location, i.e. 
the movie theatre itself with its specific format and significance. Each 
artwork was displayed for only one day, from 11 a.m. to midnight, in the 
"Studio" of the Lichtburg Filmpalast. Like the films contributed to the 
special program, which used the medium of film to explore the charged field 
between globalisation and localisation, each of these installations could 
only be experienced for a short time.
