MEDIA - WAR - CULTURE. The responsibility of culture in times of war

PANEL DISCUSSION at the opening of the 49th International Short Film 
Festival Oberhausen, 1-6 May 2003

During the past few weeks a very controversial discussion of the role to be 
played by the mass media in times of war and crisis has been going on. 
Current modes of war reporting were challenged: dis-information or 
information was the question. What is the responsibility of intellectuals, 
artists and scientists in times of crisis? Should they take up positions, 
polarizing and provoking discussion, or is it their duty to mediate, far 
removed from political actionism? 3sat and the International Short Film 
Festival Oberhausen will organise a panel discussion at the opening of the 
festival to explore this issue.

- Michael S. Cullen, journalist and author, Berlin
- Harun Farocki, documentary filmmaker, Berlin
- Adrienne Goehler, curator of the Hauptstadtkulturfonds und former Berlin 
senator for cultural affairs, Berlin
- Jochen Hörisch, media theorist and lecturer in Modern German Literature, 
University of Mannheim
- Christoph Schlingensief, filmmaker and theatre director, Berlin

The discusson will be hosted by Gert Scobel.

3sat Kulturzeit will report on Friday, 2 Mai (19.20 h).
