Dear reader,

As we're approaching our first big event, the RT staff has moved from daily web
magazine publishing to event preparations. As a result, we have far less
time available
for updating REALTOKYO, as a result of which in the last 1-2 weeks event
information
has become a little thinner, and columns less frequently updated.
We hope you recognize this as a mere, temporary shift in activities, since
with the
upcoming REALTOKYO MARKET we are going as REAL as never before, and I think
the items and information you will find at this unique event will make up
for things you
might have found missing on RT recently.

See you this weekend!

Andreas
Vice editor-in-chief
REALTOKYO

Ozaki Tetsuya (editor-in-chief of REALTOKYO)

Vol. 046: Kobayashi Yoshinori and the Manipulation of Images

Before closing down the BBS section [on war/terrorism], and for those who
haven't
read my own recent entry, allow me to quote myself here. I'd like to talk
about an
interesting story that is neither directly connected with "9.11" or the
following
assaults on Afghanistan, nor problems such as the continued Middle-East crisis.
It's a certain aspect of 'image manipulation' that I discovered after one
reader
expressed doubts concerning the illustrated book "One Hundred Years of Idiocy,"
which I helped create as the editorial director. The reader pointed out
that there are
powerful theories saying that the photograph of an abandoned, crying baby
in the
rubble of a war scenery was acted and manipulated, along with the question
whether we knew about that when we decided to include the photo in our book.

Kurazono Keizo (Internet Magazine), vol. 2

August 17

I'm visiting a place called "Secobar" in Shibuya, to do an interview with the
@NetHOME people who started the "CEP TV" project. It's a club event with house,
nu-jazz, salsa, bossa nova, Afro-Cuban and other 'adult-oriented' music,
that is
transmitted live via broadband Internet. @NetHOME president Hirose-san is
sitting
outside, happily drinking beer together with some young girl. After introducing
myself briefly we enter the Secobar, and I must say that the interior with
lamps by
lighting designer Tatsuya Nakamura and visuals by VJ Masa is quite nice.
The adult guests are mostly foreigners, and somehow I feel like being in a
club in
New York. After 11pm a unit featuring CEP TV's executive producer Takenaka
Teiichi and Kosmas Kapitza from the "Nettai Jazz Gakudan" enter the stage for a
live performance. They present a mixture of ethnic-sounding conga beats and
jazz-flavoured Hammond organ, accompanied by a live-painting show by Ponzi.

Vol. 035: Hirota Joji

Hirota Joji is a composer and performer who has been living in London for
30 years.
He came to Japan last year as a percussionist for the Royal Shakespeare
Company,
and is appearing regularly as a Japanese representative in Peter Gabriel's
"WOMAD"
festival.

REALTOKYO MARKET

It's been almost two years now since the launch of REALTOKYO, and since
it's not
satisfactory anymore to operate only online, we decided to go out and
conquer the
streets. For two days REALTOKYO presents a unique, select-shop kind of market
event. On display and for sale will be CDs, records, books, videos, fashion
and art
goods, but also bonsai trees, vegetables, and other items that represent in
one way
or another the RT staff's taste. During the two days of the event you'll be
able to meet
our editor-in-chief as well as newly arrived contributors, and above this
many of the
artists, label owners, event organizers, etc. that REALTOKYO has paid special
attention to in the past. Among the articles sold at the market you'll find
many limited
items that aren't available anywhere else in Japan (or even the world!), so
drop in for
a moment or two and explore, look, listen, chat, shop...
