On seven earlier occasions V2_ and Paradiso have organized the program
dot.nu, live cinema in motion. Now, within the context of the ‘September in
Rotterdam, the World of the Witte de With’ event, an extra edition of
dot.nu will take place, in which a closer look will be taken at how two
projects from earlier dot.nu’s have developed since their initial joint
performance.
dot.nu is one of the driving forces behind the phenomenon of ‘live cinema’,
which focuses on various forms of live projections in combination with live
music. The rise of VJ culture has led to a renewed interest in alternative
ways of presenting projected images, and now developments in both hardware
and software have made ‘live cinema’ fact rather than fiction. Having
provided an active platform for live cinema for almost two years now,
dot.nu also supports research into other forms of projection and experience.
The presentation consists of:
COH RUS) and Telco Systems (NL)
COH is the Russian musician Ivan Pavlov whose albums are published by the
German firm Raster-Noton. Under the name of COH, Pavlov who lives in
Stockholm creates compositions where elegant and penetrating sounds are
being fused into an intoxicating result. He studied mathematics and physics
at the University of Gorky (Russia), specializing in acoustics. He has
collaborated with the British group Coil, among others.
The images by Telco Systems, the artists’ duo Gideon Kiers and Lucas van
der Velden, are characterized by a clear and sober aesthetics that is
closely related to the computer technology by which they are generated. The
completely abstract images are like virtual worlds, developing by the rules
programmed by Telco Systems. Kiers and Van der Velden are also the
initiators of 0010, minuszero, D:U:M:B and DLF.
Their first presentation together was at the 2002 International Film
Festival Rotterdam. Their successful collaboration led to subsequent
performances in the Czech Republic, Great-Britain, Germany and Belgium.
game of mobile forces
with Anton Aeki, Joris Cool, Anouk de Clercq (B)
game of mobile forces is a dialogue wherein live images flirt and blend
with live music, using the new software Touch 101, a 3D program that lets
the user create a figure and link deliberately chosen parameters within the
image to consciously defined sound frequencies. The result is an
interesting field of tension between man and technology, transcending the
intrinsic boundaries of image and sound as disciplines.
