Dear REALTOKYO reader,

First of all, an apology. REALTOKYO has recently become the target of computer
hackers. Somebody sneaked into our server and installed a program that affects
also other connected servers, which means that we are in fact causing to some
degree damage to other people. I want to use this occasion and apologize to
all those concerned for this inconvenience. The main program that caused the
trouble has been removed immediately by our technical staff, so probably (and
I really hope so!) there won't be any further harm. Some basic commands,
however, might have been altered, and in order to fix this problem it is
likely that
we will have to re-install our complete OS. This would mean that we have to
shut
down the server for one full day, and I'd like to ask you for your
understanding in
advance. It will be done on next Saturday, 7th of September.

Vol. 045: Museums And Theatres Tie Up

Doug Aitken's "New Ocean" exhibition that is currently being held at the Tokyo
Opera City Art Gallery in Hatsudai is fantastic. With the exception of a
part that
includes a lightbox work that overlooks sceneries of urban nightlife, all
displayed
items are dealing with the theme of 'water.' The visuals that are projected
mostly
on combinations of multiple square- and round-shaped screens are immensely
powerful. An especially deep impression on me left the piece titled "Window 2,"
which was specially made for this Tokyo exhibition, as well as the "New Ocean
Cycle" at the end of the regular route through the exhibition space.

The first volume of the "REALTOKYO BAR" event took place on August 22, when RT
editor Ozaki Tetsuya had an interesting chat with producer Maeda Keizo, who has
been working with Meredith Monk, Dumb Type, Arto Lindsay, and many others.
Read the full conversation with the man who is at the same time leading
"Conversation
& Company" in volume 009 of RT's series introducing creative heads in Tokyo:

Young Video Artists Initiative Group Show #2

As one of the Mori Art Museum (scheduled to open in autumn 2003) pre-opening
events this one displays works by young Japanese video artists, selected by
museum director David Elliott. The venue, THINK ZONE, is divided into two
parts,
presenting prize-winning works in solo exhibitions, and other recommendable
creations in group shows. This structure is a bit difficult to understand,
considering
the fact that Matsumoto Chikara's "You in Red" or Synait's "Time," which
are parts
of this time's group show, would actually fit also in the 'prize winners'
section.
However, what's so special about this event is that the works are shown with 16
multi-screen projectors, which creates a breathtaking effect. A powerful
event that
efficiently tackles the whole space with expressive visuals.
