Netzspannung.org,the Internet platform for media art, design and technology created by the MARS
Exploratory Media Lab has reached the second phase of its development.http://netzspannung.org
We would like to use this as an opportunity for a critical analysis of the project and a chance to discuss
possibilities for further development within the framework of an experts'workshop focusing on the
perspectives on networked knowledge spaces. What opportunities do digital technologies offer for
representing digital cultures? What are the requirements and possible limitations? How can knowledge
spaces be created on the Internet? Can they be carried over into real spaces?
The workshop will focus on the developmental prospects and potential of media-cultural platforms.
"Networked knowledge spaces"will be one of the major subjects under discussion.
The workshop's aims include the creation of a shared working platform and cooperation opportunities.
Details of the workshop and its conclusions will be published in print and will be broadcast live on the
Internet via streaming. The event will then be archived on netzspannung.org.
The proposed agenda is as follows:

projects presented.
The first day will conclude with an evening meal and the possibility for further exchange of ideas.

Saturday,October 26
10:00 ---12:30 Panel 3
_Extensible multimedia information management system
In order to develop a multimedia information management system, new data structures are needed which
dynamically allow structural,time-based and spatial functionalities and relationships to be mapped to each
other and modified. This panel will focus on the requirements for developing a highly modular information
management system which can be extended flexibly and efficiently. This is of particular relevance in
relation to storage, access, retrieval and the presentation of large volumes of heterogeneous media data.

_Knowledge spaces and ambient spaces
The question of how Internet platforms and databases can be implemented not just metaphorically, but also
in a physically real sense ---i.e.as knowledge spaces that can be entered and understood ---is one of the
potential lines of development as the mobile, omnipresent, networked computer disappears.
The last panel of the workshop focuses on strategies for mixed reality and thus the overlayering and fusion
of physical and electronic knowledge spaces.
