FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

"Oberhausen On Tour": Short films travel far
(schedule and list of films below)

On 3 January 2003 ”The Curzon” cinema in London will be the first stop for
”OBERHAUSEN ON TOUR”, for which six short film programs selected from the
distribution archives of the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen
will travel for 40 days through 16 European cities.

The Short Film Festival is presenting this tour of ten German cities and
six neighbouring European countries in cooperation with renowned cinemas in
cities such as Vienna, Zurich, Marseille, Brussels, Amsterdam, Berlin,
Hamburg and Freiburg. During the tour the various programs will be screened
in the host cinemas a total of 63 times. The festival has put together six
varied programs out of its extensive distribution archive, compiled during
the course of the festival’s nearly 50-year history. Four of the six
programs - INTERNATIONAL FILM, INTERNATIONAL VIDEO, GERMAN and GERMAN CLIPS
- consist of current works culled from the traditional festival
competitions, as well as music videos that competed for the festival’s MuVi
Award for the best German clip between 1999 and 2002. The two remaining
programs, ROBERT VAN ACKEREN and EASTERN EUROPE, present older films from
Eastern Europe and short works by Robert Van Ackeren.

THE PROGRAMS
The INTERNATIONAL FILM program, which will be shown the most often during
the tour, features films from six countries in a wide variety of different
genres. In these experimental works, animated films and dance films,
documentaries and music videos from the Oberhausen International
Competition one can discover both the humorous and the disturbing.
INTERNATIONAL VIDEO, with award-winning works such as "11 de septiembre" by
Claudia Aravena and "Cargo" by Laura Waddington, is the most political and
experimental of the programs. The GERMAN program featuring award winners
from the German Competition such as "Sportfrei" by Anna Klamroth, "Mexico
City" by Christiane Lilge, and "Nebel" by the best-known German
experimental filmmaker, Matthias Müller demonstrates that German film is
not necessarily at its impressive best in the feature film mode, but rather
when it sets out in more individual and unconventional directions. German
music videos dedicated to raising the standard of pop culture can be found
in the GERMAN CLIPS program, all of them candidates for the MuVi Awards
from 1999 to 2002.

Another tour highlight is the EASTERN EUROPE program, showing, in addition
to the Oscar-winning film Tango by Zbigniew Rybzynski, some of the most
important works from socialist countries that have been screened in
Oberhausen. They include films by directors Zelimir Zilnik, Karpo Godina
and Jan Svankmajer. The works shown in the ROBERT VAN ACKEREN program were
thought to be lost for almost 30 years and were publicly screened for the
first time after their rediscovery at the 2001 Oberhausen Festival.

BIG SCREEN FOR THE SHORT FORM
The idea behind the tour is explained as follows by festival director Lars
Henrik Gass: ”The Short Film Festival has purchased short films throughout
its history, developing with time a unique archive. With "Oberhausen On
Tour" we want to make some of the best Oberhausen films accessible to a
wider audience, thus giving people the opportunity to discover short film
on the big screen.” Accompanying the film screenings, Après Film evenings
will take place in three locations following the German Clips program, on
25 January in Marseille and on 31 January in Brussels. Half-time for the
tour on 7 February will be marked with the opportunity to relax and enjoy
films, videos and music in a lounge at the Cologne Filmhaus.

As of 1 December a 24-page brochure will be available offering an overview
of the tour schedule and programs. In addition to the brochure, which will
be published in three languages, a poster will be produced announcing the
tour. Information on ”Oberhausen On Tour” is also available on the Short
Film Festival’s homepage at www.kurzfilmtage.de under the heading Short
Film Exchange.
