KRONOS: UNDER 30 PROJECT
CALL FOR SCORES
San Francisco, California
The Kronos Quartet will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2003. To
acknowledge this benchmark, Kronos, in collaboration with the Hopkins
Center at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, and the American
Music Center, is announcing the creation of the Kronos: Under 30
Project, a commissioning and composer-in-residence program for composers
under 30 years of age. The program will support the creation of new work
by young artists, and will help Kronos cultivate stronger connections
with young composers in order to develop lasting artistic relationships
with the next creative generation.
The Hopkins Center will be the presenting partner of the Kronos: Under
30 Project during its inaugural year and will receive the composer
submissions. Kronos will review the composer submissions and will select
the composer to whom the group feels most artistically committed. The
Hopkins Center and Kronos will then commission a new work for string
quartet from the selected composer. The commissioned composer will join
Kronos in a weeklong residency in San Francisco, California, to prepare
the work and a half-week residency at the Hopkins Center, which will
culminate with the world premiere of the work.
To download the following guidelines as a PDF,

Guidelines and eligibility:
* Composer's birth date must be on or after August 16, 1972.
* Composer can be of any nationality.
* Composer must be able to agree, if selected, to compose a string
quartet for Kronos and provide score and parts to Kronos no later than
March 1, 2003.
Commission -- The selected composer will receive:
* A commission for a new work for string quartet in the amount of
$5,000. (Commission fee includes score, parts, any other necessary
performance materials and copying costs.) The length of the new piece
will be determined by mutual agreement with the selected composer, but
will be in the range of 10-20 minutes.
* Travel and accommodations for one week of rehearsals with Kronos to
prepare the new work from March 10-14, 2003, in San Francisco,
California.
* Travel and accommodations for a half-week residency with Kronos at the
Hopkins Center at Dartmouth College from April 3-5, 2003. The residency
will include open rehearsals, other residency activities and the world
premiere of the new work in concert on April 5, 2003.
Submit the following materials together in one package:
1. A completed, signed application form (click here to download as PDF).
2. One score of any piece representative of composer's work, regardless
of instrumentation. (No preference will be given to composers who submit
string quartets.) The score must be clearly labeled with composer's name
and title of the work on the cover. Do not send originals, as materials
will not be returned.
3. One recording representative of composer's work on CD or
audiocassette. The recording may include more than one work, but should
be no longer than 30 minutes. (No preference will be given to composers
who submit recordings of string quartets.) The submitted recording may
include the work which has been submitted in score form, but that is not
required. Composer should label the recording with the names and timings
of works and the names and instruments of the performers. MIDI or
synthesizer realizations are acceptable.
4. One sample program note. The program note must be written by the
composer. The note may be for the work that has been submitted in score
form, but that is not required.
5. Resume or bio, including educational background, teachers, awards,
professional affiliations and a complete list of works.
Please note that materials will not be returned. If the selected
composer has submitted a string quartet as part of his/her application,
Kronos reserves the option to select that piece as the commissioned
work, provided that the piece has never been performed.
Deadline and Notification:
* Complete submissions must be received at the Hopkins Center by AUGUST
15, 2002.
* Incomplete, illegible, and/or late submissions will not be considered.
* Selected composer will be notified by the end of September 2002.
Selected composer will be announced on the Kronos Quartet website,
http://www.kronosquartet.org, no later than October 1, 2002.
