NEWSLETTER No. 6

EDITORIAL

Dear Readers!

The months of May and June are always packed with festivals. So in this
issue's "Awards and Honours" section we're able to pay tribute to an
especially large group of prizewinners.

We've also extended our festival calendar, particularly with regards to
German events, far into the autumn months. In case I've forgotten anything,
please let me know!

At least in the northern hemisphere, summer is finally here, meaning that
many of us will be off on holiday soon. We will therefore be taking a short
summer break before mailing the next newsletter. However, we will continue
to update the listings in the Short Film Magazine, so it's still worthwhile
to stop by from time to time.

Best wishes to all for a happy and restful holiday!

TOPIC

Stepping into the breach: German Short Film Association established

On the 5th of May, during the 48th International Short Film Festival in
Oberhausen, the AG Kurzfilm was founded. Short film festivals, film
schools, and organisations in the fields of film sales and distribution
joined forces to work toward improving public awareness of short films.
»Our foremost aim«, according to the association's press release, is »to
strengthen the standing of German short films and their authors, directors
and producers outside of Germany«. On the 15th of June, just a few weeks
after its establishment, the association's newly elected board held its
first session. Members of the board include Carsten Spicher from the Short
Film Festival Oberhausen, Cristina Marx from the DFFB and Astrid Kühl from
the Short Film Agency Hamburg.

It's still much too early to report on measures planned by the nascent
association, or to expect any concrete achievements, but the course has
been set and a framework for action has been mapped out. Due to the fact
that the association's establishment was preceded by a two-year period of
preparation, featuring intense discussions and a great many ups and downs,
the work at hand for this pressure group is perfectly clear by now to all
of those involved, together with the necessity to begin right away to
tackle the mountain of especially urgent tasks that need to be addressed in
the interest of the short film.

If one is familiar with the German situation, it will be noted that no
cross-regional lobby for short film has existed until now. The short film
enjoys neither representation nor a voice of any kind in the institutions
and committees currently shaping film policy, even though these often make
decisions directly concerning short films (...) Again and again it was made
clear that the interests of 'the short film' can only be taken into
consideration if the main protagonists join together in a unified
association (...)

NEWS

Flickerfest establishes Short Film Bureau for Australian Films || June 2002

The director of the Flickerfest International Short Film Festival, Bronwyn
Kidd, has announced that the organisation will expand into distribution of
Australian short films both nationally and internationally. Various factors
have enabled this such as the building up of international contacts over
the last 12 years and constant requests from international broadcasters and
institutions to purchase Australian short films. According to Kidd,
"Flickerfest has been developing its distribution arm in Australia for the
past five years with the licensing of international films for local sales
and now looks forward to putting its extensive international contacts and
sales expertise into practise to promote Australian short films in the
international and national marketplace".
In the past few months Flickerfest has been very busy licensing a quality
catalogue of Australian short films and animations. Titles include Nicholas
Tomnay's award winning film "The Host" and Rachel Griffith's latest short
'Round About' .
Flickerfest Films Short Film Bureau has its first european appearance at
Cinema Jove's short film market in Valencia.
