THE PLAYWRIGHTS' CENTER ANNOUNCES A CALL FOR THEATER MANIFESTOS
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: July 30, 2002
MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota: The Playwrights' Center and the Guthrie
Theater, in association with Anna Deavere Smith's Institute on the Arts and
Civic Dialogue, the Literary Managers and Dramaturgs of the Americas, Actors
Theatre of Louisville and Vanderbilt University Theatre, is sponsoring a
competition for manifestos that speak to the need and necessity for the
creation of new work.
* The author(s) of the winning manifesto will receive an award of
$2,500, and The Playwrights' Center will display all entries during the 2003
PlayLabs. The submission deadline is March of 2003, and the competition
guidelines will be available in the fall of 2002. A distinguished panel,
including Morgan Jenness, Tony Kushner and Diana Son, will select the
winning manifesto.
* These manifestos can be created in any written or alternative media
format by anyone or any group playwrights, ensembles, critics, scholars,
artists-in-training, etc. providing that the manifesto sets forth a vision
and charge for the creation of new work for the theatre in the 21st century.
Furthermore, the manifestos can describe ongoing work (such manifestos may
already exist and they are eligible) or they can envision a kind of work yet
to be realized on stage.
* CRITERIA - While it is clear that the evaluation process will be
entirely subjective, the judges may consider the following factors in
arriving at their decision: ideological originality, style of presentation,
potential for impact, and a synthesis of aesthetic energy, political and
social forces, intellectual currents, and scientific breakthroughs of our
time.
* GUIDELINES - At least one author of the manifesto must be an American
citizen or resident.
Send all manifestos to:
CALL FOR MANIFESTOS,
The Playwrights' Center,
2301 Franklin Avenue East,
Minneapolis, Minnesota,
U.S.A.,
55406-1099
* Each submission must include five copies of the manifesto along with
a completed application form. Application forms can be requested by mail at
the above address or by phoning 612.332.7481.
* The manifesto must be able to be evaluated by English-speaking
judges, and therefore must either be submitted in English or must be
accompanied by an English translation that is acceptable to the author.
* TERMS AND AGREEMENTS - The winning submission(s) will be announced
during PlayLabs at The Playwrights' Center in Minneapolis during the summer
of 2003.
* The winner will receive $2,500. Should there be more than one
winner, the prize-money will be split equally among the recipients.
* The Playwrights' Center reserves the right to exhibit all manifesto
submissions.
* The Playwrights' Center reserves non-exclusive rights to publish the
manifestos (i.e., authors may publish them elsewhere, as well). Any
royalties for publication will be divided among the manifesto authors on a
favored nations basis.
* The authors retain all other rights to their manifestos.
