LOCATION/DISLOCATION

At a time when cyberspace is still being mapped out, this exhibition profiles seven Web-based projects by Québec artists investigating concepts of "place" on the Internet.

Artist Yan Breuleux compares the evolving "geography" of the Internet to the growth of a new continent, where questions of power, difference, negotiation, and points of access come into play. In HistoiresSansFin(NeverEndingStories) Breuleux culls graphic signs whose meanings are recognizable across borders and cultures.

Several of the works consider how notions of architectural space are affected by the relationship between the physical and virtual. Green, by the Æ collective (Gisèle Trudel and Stéphane Claude), pays homage to the work of visionary landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, creator of New York City's Central Park and Montréal's Mont-Royal Park. Johnny Ranger and Bill Sullivan's Everywhere/tout par tout questions the place of the individual and how identity changes through the shifting contexts of real and fabricated environments. Brad Todd's Utopia PKWY takes Joseph Cornell's house (Utopia Parkway, Queens, New York) as a motif, and transforms it into a Web-based multimedia collage evocative of Cornell's signature boxes. In the main gallery space s(e)izing nyc, 1 : 10 000 : 1 by the architectural collective Atelier in situ (Annie Lebel and Stéphane Pratte) has as its central motif New York City's measured urban grid. Within this grid, the New Museum and the viewer are featured in a series of spatial and temporal transpositions that echo the experience of displacement on the Web.

The temporal aspect of navigating on the Web is a key concern for artist Nancy Tobin. Inspired by the ubiquitous rest areas on North American highways, Tobin's RESTAREA is a "stop" in cyberspace where the viewer is invited to wait without interaction. In contrast, the Silophone project by [The User] (Thomas McIntosh and Emmanuel Madan) transforms an emblematic industrial Montréal construction, Silo #5, into an interactive musical instrument that can be played at a distance via telephone lines and the Web.

Cette exposition présente sept projets Web d'artistes québécois examinant le concept de lieu sur Internet à un moment où des cartographies du cyberespace sont conceptualisées.

Yan Breuleux compare la géographie changeante d'Internet à la croissance d'un nouveau continent, les principaux enjeux étant liés aux questions de pouvoir, de différence, de négociation et de points d'accès. Dans Histoires sans fin (Never Ending History), Breuleux choisit des signes graphiques dont le sens peut se révéler par-delà les frontières et les cultures.

Plusieurs des oeuvres considèrent la manière dont la notion d'espace architectural est affectée par le rapport entre les mondes physique et virtuel. Green, du collectif Æ (Gisèle Trudel et Stéphane Claude), rend hommage au travail de l'architecte paysager visionnaire Frederick Law Olmsted, créateur de Central Park à New York et du parc du Mont-Royal à Montréal. Everywhere/tout par tout, de Johnny Ranger et Bill Sullivan, remet en question la place de l'individu et la façon dont son identité se transforme selon les contextes changeants des environnements réels et fabriqués. Utopia PKWY de Brad Todd utilise la maison de Joseph Cornell (Utopia Parkway, Queens, New York) comme motif, transformée pour l'occasion en un collage multimédia conçu pour le Web et évoquant les boîtes caractéristiques de l'oeuvre de Cornell. Dans l'espace principal de la galerie, s(e)izing nyc, 1 : 10 000 : 1, l'installation du collectif en architecture Atelier in situ (Annie Lebel et Stéphane Pratte), utilise la grille urbaine de New York comme motif central. Le New Museum et le spectateur prennent place au sein de cette grille et subissent une série de transpositions spatiales et temporelles qui font écho à l'expérience de déplacement sur le Web.

L'aspect temporel de la navigation sur le Web est la préoccupation principale de l'artiste Nancy Tobin. Inspirée par les aires de repos omniprésentes sur les autoroutes nord-américaines, Restarea constitue une halte dans le cyberespace au cours de laquelle le spectateur est invité à attendre sans possibilité d'interaction. Par contraste, le projet Silophone du collectif [The User] (Thomas McIntosh et Emmanuel Madan) transforme une construction industrielle emblématique de Montréal, le Silo # 5, en un instrument musical interactif dont il est possible de "jouer" à distance au moyen du téléphone et du Web.
