Urban Screening in Berlin in collaboration with DIE ZEIT online.

Artists:

Giselle Beiguelman (Brazil), Simon Faithfull (Great Britain), Mariam  
Ghani (Afghanistan), Han Hoogerbrugge (Netherlands), Little Warsaw  
(András Gálik & Bálint Havas, Hungary), Lena Merhej (Lebanon), Berit  
Zemke (Germany)

Coinciding with the 20th commemoration of the fall of the Berlin wall,  
WL Project Berlin | Hong Kong together with Visual Foreign  
Correspondents Foundation, invited 7 international artists to develop  
work relating to borders and boundaries and to take different  
positions relating to the nature of virtual or physical boundaries,  
walls or barriers as well as reflecting on the current state of the  
world. In times of a global economic crisis and international acts of  
terrorism, there is a clear tendency to re-erect or strengthen  
existing barriers; just as the European Union is strengthening its  
exterior borders.

While the artists Little Warsaw sketch the time span from before the  
fall of the wall until today, Berit Zemke highlights the Monday- 
strikes and previous and current surveillance possibilities. Han  
Hoogerbrugge reflects recent political and social developments through  
animated storytelling. Lena Marhej depicts that peace is an illusion,  
and Simon Faithfull uses his PalmPilot as a tool for communication to  
take us along on his journeys. The warning signs in Giselle  
Beiguelman’s animation reflect our interpretations of law and order.  
With her background both in New York and Afghanistan, Mariam Ghani  
plays and exchanges with the existing presumptions on these cultures  
in conflict.

PROJECT und Visual Foreign Correspondents Foundation and is supported

Urban Screening in Berlin in Zusammenarbeit mit DIE ZEIT online.

KünstlerInnen:

Giselle Beiguelman (Brasilien), Simon Faithfull (Großbritannien),  
Mariam Ghani (Afghanistan), Han Hoogerbrugge (Niederlande), Little  
Warsaw (András Gálik & Bálint Havas, Ungarn), Lena Merhej (Libanon),  
Berit Zemke (Deutschland)

Auf Initiative von WL Project Berlin | Hong Kong und anlässlich des  
20. Jahrestages des Falls der Berliner Mauer lud die Visual Foreign  
Correspondents Foundation sieben internationale Künstler und  
Künstlerinnen ein, eine Videoarbeit zum Thema Grenzen und Mauern zu  
erstellen. Dabei spiegeln unterschiedliche Ansätze über die Natur von  
Grenzen, Barrieren und Mauern, virtuell oder real, zerstört oder  
(re)konstruiert, unsere gegenwärtige globale Verfassung wider. So  
zeigen sich in Zeiten von globaler Wirtschaftskrise und  
Terroranschlägen deutliche Tendenzen zum Ausbau vorhandener Barrieren,  
wie auch die Europäische Union ihre Außengrenzen sukzessive verstärkt.

Während Little Warsaw mit der Spanne von der Zeit vor dem Fall der  
Berliner Mauer bis heute spielt, nimmt Berit Zemke direkten Bezug auf  
die Montagsdemonstrationen und die Überwachungsmöglichkeiten von  
damals und heute. Han Hoogerbrugge zeigt mit einer absurden Geschichte  
aktuelle politische und soziale Entwicklungen auf. Bei Lena Marhej  
erweist sich der Frieden als Illusion, und Simon Faithfull benutzt  
seinen PalmPilot als Dokumentationsmedium, um uns von seinen Reisen zu  
berichten. Die Warn- und Verbotsschilder in Giselle Beiguelmans  
Animation spiegeln unsere Kontemplation von Recht und Ordnung wider.  
Miriam Ghani spielt mit Vorurteilen zwischen den amerikanischen und  
afghanischen Kulturen.

Das Projekt ist eine Zusammenarbeit zwischen WL PROJECT und der Visual  
Foreign Correspondents Foundation und wird unterstützt vom Amsterdam  
Fonds voor de Kunst; Medienpartner ist ZEIT online.
