14. International Festival of Contemporary Arts – City of Women

9th – 17th October 2008, Ljubljana and Ptuj

Raw Symbiosis / Animals-Nature-Culture

Is it time to sit back and relax or is it time for action?

The Association for the Promotion of Women in Culture – City of
Women is announcing the 14th international City of Women festival,
titled Raw Symbiosis. This year's programme, again intended for a
broad and varied festival audience, focuses on the (self)
understanding of culture through nature, on power relations through
environmental discourse, on human relationship to animals, the
natural, and the transient, and finally on technological tools or
extensions that testify to a new nature.

The 14th International Festival of Contemporary Arts – City of Women
will present and be represented by 60 international artists,
theoreticians and activists from a brad plethora of disciplines. Our
guests come from 21 countries from around the globe and are all
innovative in their approach to the subject. To art, knowledge and
freedom of thought enthusiasts the festival will offer one weak of
more than 35 events – more than a third gratis – including
programmes specifically designed for children and youth. A special
feature of this year’s festival edition is an encompassing free-of-
charge educational programme at the Škuc Gallery with lectures and
workshops presented by local environmentalist initiatives and
international guests.

future of death
9th – 15th October 2008, Kapelica Gallery, Ljubljana
15th October at 9 pm, Kapelica Gallery, Ljubljana – collective
public performance

The 14th International Festival of Contemporary Arts – City of Women
will feature a five-day workshop focusing on human attitudes toward
death and dying, held in Kapelica Gallery and conducted by
acknowledged artists Anton Mirto (London) and Alit Kreiz (Tel Aviv)
aka A2 Company.

Future of Death workshop presents a unique opportunity for us to
confront the emotions arising from our own mortality and the death of
others, as well as to become aware of the thoughts, feelings and
experiences of other people dealing with death. The performance
unfolds in a manner which is simple and direct, yet bursting with
metaphorical abundance: each “performer” takes the stage with a
bag of dirt which he empties onto another individual lying before him/
her. This person then lies down as well and waits to be sprinkled
with soil by the next person to arrive on the stage, and so on…

The intensity and emotional vibrancy of each performance within the
performance reflects the contribution of each participant and the
group dynamics or connectedness, which the workshop implies and
delivers. In view of the conceptual background of the Future of Death
project – the aim to reveal how fear of death relates to and conveys
different cultural codes, religious beliefs and social environments
– it is important that the group be heterogeneous. Therefore, we
would like to extend the broadest invitation to all those interested
to join the workshop: women, men, children, young people, adults and
the elderly, people from various age groups, occupational fields,
nationalities and (religious and other) beliefs….

The workshop will last four hours per day, either in the morning or
afternoon, depending on participants’ majority preference. The
conclusion of the workshop will be followed by a presentation of the
workshop in the form of a collective public performance, on Wednesday
the 15th of October.
