" In the early 1900s the All Russian Physicians Society attempted to
gain access to the kefir grain by sending a beautiful young woman
named Irina Sakharova to coax a Caucasian Prince into sharing some of
his grains. It is said that the prince fell in love with Irina, but
refused to hand offer the kefir. When the woman attempted to return
home, the prince had her kidnapped. She managed to escape, and told
the czar of her ordeal. The prince offered jewels and gold as
retribution, but the beautiful Irina refused and demanded the
probiotic jewel of kefir instead, which she finally received. Health
officials in Moscow used the kefir grains to successfully treat
tuberculosis. In 1973, when Irina was 85 years old, the former USSR
Ministry of the Food Industry honored her for her contribution. "
