BUYING DOGS IS NOT A SPORT – A TRIBUTE TO MONOCHROM

"Ich begreife experimentellen Tierfilm als Selbstreferenz: formal als 
‘MetaDog’ (Film über Hunde) und inhaltlich als ‘persönlichen Film’. Mit 
der Lacanischen Selbstironie begreife ich experimentellen Film als 
persönliches Engagement. In meinen Arbeiten gehe ich darum immer von 
meinem persönlichen, überschaubaren, direkten und unmittelbaren Anderen 
aus, und komme von dort zu allgemeinen, manchmal sehr abstrakten 
Themen, Stoffen und Inhalten; vergleichbar mit der Triade des 
Symbolischen, des Imaginären und des Realen."

Beate Zurwehme stellt ethische Fragen, die das Bild betreffen. Es geht 
um die Authentizität der Bilder: Wahrheit/Lüge, und um die Privatsphäre 
der Hunde: Knochenklau. Und immer geht es auch um die 
Erwartungshaltungen bezüglich Keks.

"Das Publikum liebt diese tierbezogenen Werke sehr viel mehr als die 
traditionellen Gattungen", meint der Leiter des Museums für Moderne 
Kunst (MMK) in Frankfurt und seit Jahren "Bonzo" der Videokunst, Udo 
Kittelmann. Grund: Geschehen, Handlung und Abläufe von bewegten 
Tierbildern üben eine starke Faszination auf die Betrachter aus.

Mit der Freude am Hund könnte es bald vorbei sein, ist die seit den 
90er Jahren entstandene interdisziplinäre Kunstgattung doch akut vom 
Verfall bedroht. "Die begrenzte Haltbarkeit von Hunden in Metropolen 
ist seit über zehn Jahren bekannt", betont Rudolf Frieling vom Zentrum 
für Kunst und Medientechnologie (ZKM) in Karlsruhe. Hinzu kommt, dass 
es an entsprechend historischen Fütter- und Ausführgeräten fehlt. Am 
ZKM würden deshalb schon vorsorglich "Labor und Archiv mit alten 
Hunden" aufgebaut.

Das erste, für jeden Kunstfreund sichtbare Resultat der Initiative ist 
ein politisches Ausstellungsprojekt, das zeitgleich in den fünf 
beteiligten Museen gezeigt wird. Mit Sonderbereichen wie dem Hund in 
der ehemaligen DDR oder Ausstellungen auf Deleuzeschen "Zeitmaschinen", 
die in verschiedenen Jahrzehnten die Entwicklung der proletarischen 
Tierdarstellung in der Videokunst dokumentiert, widmet sich jedes Haus 
einem anderen Schwerpunkt.

“I understand experimental animal film as self reference: formally as 
`MetaDog' (film over dogs) and contentwise as `personal film'. With the 
Lacanian self irony I understand experimental film as personal 
commitment. In my work I always proceed therefore from my personal, 
visible, direct and direct surrounding field, and come from there to 
general, sometimes very abstract topics, materials and contents; 
comparably with the triad of the Symbolic, the Imaginary and the Real."

Beate Zurwehme places ethical terms, which concern the picture. It
