Emmett Leith, 78, a Pioneer in the Development of Holography, Dies

Emmett Leith, a scientist who took the concept of the hologram and 
added the technology of the laser to help create three-dimensional 
photography, died on Dec. 23 at a hospital in Ann Arbor, Mich. He was 
78.

The cause was an internal hemorrhage, said Kim Leith, his daughter.

Funeral services were held Thursday for Emmett Leith, a professor of 
electrical engineering and computer science at the University of 
Michigan who was widely known for his work with lasers and 
holographs. Leith died Dec. 23 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital after 
falling ill the previous day at his home in Canton. He was 78.
Leith, one of the early innovators of holography in the 1960s, had 
been honored at a retirement party several weeks ago, although his 
official date of retirement was not until Saturday. He had worked at 
U-M for 52 years.
