Only the fertilized female yellow jacket lives during the winter. 
All males die. This may explain their aggressiveness in early autumn (last "chance"). 

When a fertilized female emerges from hibernation in early spring, she will need protein to nurse her young. 
In the beginning she is a single mom doing everything, until she can raise some workers and get some grants
