Ausschreibung zur Ausstellung "DER FREIE WILLE"

 

Liebe Künstler, hiermit laden wir Euch ein, bei der Ausstellung M°A°I°S 
6 mit dem Thema "Der freie Wille" teilzunehmen. Sie findet diesen Sommer 
(15. Juni - 31.Juli 2005) im Bunker unter der Arena in Berlin statt. Die 
Arena feiert ihr 10-jähriges Bestehen und veranstaltet zu diesem Anlass 
ein großes Festival. Am 15. Juni hält Michail Gorbatschow eine Ansprache 
zu "20 Jahre Glasnost". Im Anschluss daran wird die Ausstellung eröffnet.

 

Die Bewerbungen für die Ausstellung können bis zum 15. April 2005 
(Poststempel) eingereicht werden und die besten 20 Vorschläge werden 
realisiert. Die Künstler erhalten für ihre Materialkosten einen 
Pauschalbetrag. Zur Ausstellungseröffnung erscheint ein Katalog.

Ankündigung der Ausstellung "DER FREIE WILLE"

 

In der Bunkeranlage auf dem ehemaligen Todesstreifen der Berliner Mauer 
im Stadtteil Treptow findet vom 15. Juni bis 31. Juli 2005 ein 
Ausstellungsprojekt der besonderen Art statt. Internationale Künstler 
setzen hier ihre ganz eigenen Vorstellungen und Visionen zum Thema "Der 
Freie Wille" um. Der Ort der Schau  lenkt den Blick auf die 
vielschichtigen Arbeiten zeitgenössischer Kunst und schafft einen neuen 
künstlerischen und geschichtlichen Kontext zum 20 jährigen 
Glasnost-Jubiläum in diesem Jahr. Die Ausstellung wird im Rahmen der 
Feierlichkeiten zum 10 jährigen Bestehen des Veranstaltungszentrums 
arena Berlin gezeigt, das heute zu den bedeutendsten und 
facettenreichsten Kulturstandorten Berlins zählt.

 

Gezeigt werden raumbezogene Arbeiten, das heißt vorwiegend 
Installationen aber auch andere Medien wie beispielsweise Video oder 
Performances. Die Beiträge der Künstler beschäftigen sich offen mit dem 
Thema Der Freie Wille, aber auch gezielt mit neuen Perspektiven und 
Impulsen, die der Öffnung der Sowjetunion bzw. Russlands und des 
ehemaligen Ostblocks entspringen. Eine unterirdische Mauer, die durch 
den ganzen Bunker verläuft, wird von der Kuratoren der Ausstellung mit 
einer Birkenwald-Fototapete überzogen. Sie bildet den zentralen 
Bezugspunkt der Ausstellung. Die Künstler treten mit dieser Perspektive 
in einen Dialog. Als russisches Landschaftsmotiv symbolisiert der 
Birkenwald Sehnsuchtsgefühle und steht zugleich als Metapher für das 
Ausstellungsthema. Die Eröffnung findet am 15. Juni 2005 in Anwesenheit 
von Michail Gorbatschow statt. Verschiedene Performances und ein 
Rahmenprogramm (Symposium, Lesungen etc.) sind während der Laufzeit 
geplant.

Invitation to apply for the exhibition "THE FREE WILL"

 

Dear artists, we would like to invite you to participate in our 
exhibition 'Der freie Wille' (The Free Will), which will take place in 
the bunker under the Arena in Berlin this summer (June 15th to July 31st 
2005). The Arena is organising a big festival to mark its 10th 
anniversary. On June 15th Michael Gorbachev will be giving a speech on 
the topic of '20 Years of Glasnost'. Thereupon the exhibition will open.

 

Applications will be accepted until April 15th 2005 (postmark) and the 
twenty best proposals will be realized. Artists are invited to submit 
concepts for site-specific works and interdisciplinary projects and 
performances. Artists will receive an allowance to cover the cost of 
material. A catalogue will be published to coincide with the opening.

Announcing the exhibition "THE FREE WILL"

 

>From June 15 to July 31, 2005 a unique exhibition project will take 
place in the bunker extending along the former death strip of the Berlin 
wall in Berlin-Treptow, in which international artists will realize 
their ideas and visions in regard to the theme "free will." The site 
focuses attention on the complex works of contemporary art and creates a 
new artistic and historic context on the occasion of the twentieth 
anniversary of Glasnost this year. The exhibition will be held as part 
of the celebrations marking the tenth anniversary of arena Berlin, which 
has become one of the city's most important venues, hosting a diverse 
range of events.

The show will focus on site-specific work, i.e. mostly installations, 
but will also include work in other media such as video or performances. 
The contributions should deal with the topic of "free will" and also 
focus on new perspectives and impulses stemming from the opening of the 
former Soviet Union and Eastern Bloc nations. The curators will cover an 
underground wall traversing the entire bunker with photo wallpaper 
showing a birch forest. This will constitute the central point of 
reference for the exhibition, with artists entering into a dialog with 
this perspective. A typical Russian landscape motif, the birch forest 
symbolizes feelings of longing and serves as a metaphor for the theme of 
the exhibition. The exhibition opening will take place on June 15, 2005; 
the guest of honor will be Mikhail Gorbachev. Various performances and 
an accompanying program (including a symposium and readings) are 
scheduled for the duration of the exhibition.
