Although culture is probably not exactly what people in the
quake-stricken regions feel like talking about at the moment,
I'd like to introduce a guidebook related to Asian culture that
was published in November 2004. Strictly speaking, it's a new
edition of a publication that first appeared three years ago,
and that I wrote about in this column at the time.

Kung Fu Hustle
by Oh! Shomei

The new film directed by and starring Hong Kong's comedy king
Stephen Chow is a Kung Fu movie full of homages to his hero,
Bruce Lee. While Chow's last masterpiece "Shaolin Soccer" was a
peculiar mixture of the popular sport soccer and Kung Fu, this
time the director presents a fireworks of his own taste by
employing a whole army of '70s Kung Fu stars. The story is
stuffed with tiny details only maniacs will probably be able to
compute, but Chow serves them dipped in a deliciously comical
sauce. A director who enjoys himself to full extent, plus
entertains the audience... You could hardly ask for more!
