Vol. 107: Art and Social Responsibility
by Ozaki Tetsuya

I went to Berlin to visit Germany's biggest media art festival,
"transmediale 05". As director Andreas Broeckmann mentions in
his text he wrote for our RealCities page, what made this year's
event particularly interesting is that a number of symposia and
lectures were held to give a broad overview of the state of media
art especially in Asia. Popular program points included also an
exhibition of Mikami Seiko + Ichikawa Sota's "gravicells"
project, and a performance by noteworthy Indonesian artist Venzha.

NIPAF 05: Performance on the Street
by Taguchi Hiroyuki

Here's a recommended event related to the 12th Nippon
International Performance Art Festival (NIPAF), which is held
between February 21 and 23. First of all, it's free. Welcome
disassimilations in everyday life, street performances represent
an opposing position to stage events with their "absence of
unwanted rivals". The question is how the artists here will
manage to deal with passers-by who stop but end up watching the
pretty office ladies shopping at Kinokuniya... What's sure is
that you can expect spirited performances that aren't second to
the "real" festival, even though for this one you don't have to
pay. And if everything works out according to the organizers'
plans, you like the spectacle so much that you buy a NICAF
ticket on the spot...
