In den Suppen Thailands und Umgebung

Zur Ausstellungseröffnung „In the Middle of the Night. Die 
Neuerwerbungen seit 1996“ (28.8. – 6.11.2005) kocht der thailändische 
Künstler Rirkrit Tiravanija am 28. August 2005 um 11.30 Uhr in der 
Kunsthalle Bielefeld mit Assistenten für maximal achthundert Personen 
eine mild gewürzte thailändische Suppe. Auch andere Künstler, Martin 
Brockhoff, Friedrike Feldmann, Matthias Müller, Veit Mette und Clemens 
von Wedemeyer, von denen Werke angekauft worden sind, werden anwesend 
sein.

Tiravanija, geboren 1961 in Buenos Aires, lebt und pendelt seit Jahren 
zwischen New York, Berlin und Chiang Mai in Nordthailand, wo er 1998 
ein kommunales Kunstprojekt unter dem Titel „The Land“ initiiert hat. 
Es geht um biologischen Ackerbau und finanzielle Selbstversorgung 
ebenso wie um ein internationales Begegnungszentrum des Künstlers. 
Tiravanijas italienischer Kollege Maurizio Cattelan hat „The Land“ als 
„dolce utopia“ bezeichnet – es gibt im Rahmen des arbeitsamen wie 
kommunikativen Miteinanders keine Hierarchien.

Tiravanija, 2004 mit dem „Hugo Boss Preis“ ausgezeichnet und unlängst 
mit Retrospektiven großer Museen in Chiang Mai, Rotterdam, Paris und 
London geehrt, war 2001 im Gutspark Böckel mit einer „Singing 
Sculpture“ präsent. Eine Schauspielerin des Bielefelder Theaters, 
Susanne Krämer, sang in seinem Auftrag Sonntag für Sonntag auf dem 
Gelände der westfälischen Dichterin Hertha König die Namen aller Bäume 
in lateinischer Sprache vor.

Mehr als 150 Neuerwerbungen seit 1996 stellt die Kunsthalle Bielefeld 
im Herbst 2005 vor – Werke von Pablo Picasso zu Hiroshi Sugimoto, von 
Edvard Munch zu Jonathan Meese und von Diane Arbus zu Louise Bourgeois. 
Neben der Staff Stiftung und dem Förderkreis Kunsthalle Bielefeld e.V. 
hat in diesem Zusammenhang seit dem Sommer 2005 eine anonyme 
Bielefelder Sammlergruppe eine Rolle gespielt. Sie stellt ihre 
ausgewählten zeitgenössischen Neuerwerbungen, zu denen im Lauf der 
Jahre weitere Werke hinzukommen werden, bis Ende 2009 als 
Dauerleihgaben zur Verfügung. So enthält die Ausstellung sechs 
Schwarzweißfotos ohne Titel von Adam Fuss aus der 
Kunsthallenretrospektive von 2003 und die vierundzwanzig Silberkugeln 
mit dem Titel „Camel“ von Not Vital aus seiner Ausstellung im Frühjahr 
2005. Bislang unbekannt sind eine autobiografische Installation, 
nämlich ein Grabmal von Jonathan Meese, ein „Gelber Hund“ aus Keramik 
des „Goldener Löwe“-Preisträgers Thomas Schütte, eine unlängst in 
Bremen preisgekrönte Videoinstallation von Clemens von Wedemeyer und
eine große Bodenarbeit mit Stahlplatten, Campingkochern, Töpfen, 
Tellern und Besteck des thailändischen Künstlers Rirkrit Tiravanija. 
Diese Neuankäufe von Werken aus der Zeit von 2001 bis 2004 waren 
bislang öffentlich nicht zu sehen.

Der Ausstellungskatalog „In the Middle of the Night. Die Neuwerbungen 
seit 1996“ kostet an der Museumskasse 20,- €. Die Kunsthalle dankt der 
Staff Stiftung, Lemgo, und dem Förderkreis Kunsthalle Bielefeld e.V. 
für die Unterstützung der Publikation.

The Thai artist Rirkrit Tiravanija cooks the new advertisements since 
1996 (28.8. - 6,11,2005) on 28 August 2005 at 11.30 o'clock in the arts 
center Bielefeld with assistants for maximally eight hundred persons a 
mildly peppered Thai soup.  Also other artist, Martin hope, Friedrike 
man, Matthias Mueller, Veit Mette and Clemens of Wedemeyer, of which 
work purchase be, will present be.  Tiravanija, born 1961 in Buenos

since 1996 the arts center Bielefeld in the autumn presents than 150 
new advertisements 2005 - works of Pablo Picasso to Hiroshi Sugimoto, 
of EDP pool of broadcasting corporations Munch to Jonathan Meese and 
from DIANE Arbus to Louise Bourgeois.  Beside the Staff donation and 
the promotion circle arts center Bielefeld e.V. played an anonymous 
Bielefelder group of collecting tanks a role in this connection since 
the summer 2005.  It makes its selected contemporary new advertisements 
available, to which in the course of the years further works will come, 
to at the end of 2009 as continuous loans.

Thus the exhibition contains six black-and-white photos without titles 
of Adam foot from the arts center retrospective of 2003 and the 
twenty-four silver balls with the title "Camel" from emergency vital 
from its exhibition in the spring 2005.  So far unknown a 
auto+biographic installation, i.e. a tomb of Jonathan Meese, a "yellow 
dog" from ceramic(s) "golden Loewe" winner Thomas container, one 
recently in Bremen price-crowned video installation of Clemens of 
Wedemeyer and a large soil work with steel plates, camping digesters, 
pots, plates and cutlery of the Thai artist Rirkrit Tiravanija are.  
These new purchases of works from the time of 2001 to 2004 were not to 
be seen so far publicly.

The exhibition catalog "into the Middle OF the Night.  The new 
advertisements since 1996"costs at the museum cash 20, - €. the arts 
center thanks the Staff donation, Lemgo, and the promotion circle arts
