press release

FIELD OF VISION: NEW YORK / http://www.field-of-vision.net

the lab gallery, 501 Lexington Avenue, New York, NY10017 USA Tel 212 3392092

13.09.04 - 18.09.04 12 noon - 8 PM

Closing reception: Friday 17 September, 6.30 - 9 PM

Organised over the internet and featuring the work of over 200 artists this innovative live art event is launched at the lab
gallery in New York from 13 - 18 September.

New departures in curating using web based networks and a web site in English, German, Spanish and Chinese allows
access to artists worldwide. And the response to this event has been overwhelming attracting high quality images from
diverse cultural and geographical viewpoints. The New York field is the first in a series or events with further fields
planned for London, Berlin, Frankfurt, Sofia and Kaohsiung

Field of Vision: New York investigates how people from across the world view the city. Over 700 images about New York
have been sent in by e-mail from artists whose home countries are as far afield as Taiwan, Mexico, Brazil, Finland, Poland,
Russia, Turkey, Slovenia, Chile, Nigeria, Senegal, USA, Canada, UK, Germany, Ireland, Australia, Spain, Italy and South
Africa.

Several hundred images will be selected from this unique image bank, printed out postcard size and assembled into a
billboard format collage on location at the lab. Using low tech cut and paste methods the organizing artists will work
together to incorporate the material into the surface of the work. The general topography of New York ? corners of
buildings, pavements and other ubiquitous elements of the city, forms the background of the collage - an 8 x 36 ft digital
print, pasted to the gallery wall and created from photographs collaged digitally and blurred to give a stunning spatial
effect.

The innovative structure of the project bridges live art and internet based formats and creates an interface between the
synthetic digital world of virtual reality and the physical world we inhabit. Building the wall from collaged material sent in
by one group of artists and edited by the organising artists involves deconstructing and reconfiguring narratives and
mediating between cultural and media conventions. In this unique event there is no pre-conceived outcome for the work
and in this way Field of Vision: New York is a vital means of exploring the spaces we inhabit and making sense of our
present time and multiplicity of perceptions - our collective field of vision.

Field of Vision: New York is the first of a world wide series of visual fields organised by digital art projects. Artists
collaborating on the New York field are: Paul Dacey (USA), Alison Dalwood (UK), Stephan Hausmeister (D/UK), Iratxe
Hernández Simal (E), Günter Ku (ROC), Chapman Kuo (ROC), Richard Purdy (USA), Andrej Vrabchev (BG), and
Michael Wright (UK).
