Vol. 5: Nishimura Yoshiaki (planning director)

Welcome to the final installment of "Redesigning Tokyo".
Our talk guest this time is Nishimura Yoshiaki, whose activities
can be summarized in "making, writing and teaching": he plans and
produces museum displays, operates websites, and hosts various
types of workshops. One of his most acclaimed projects is "Sound
Bum", a sonic journey that allows visitors to experience places
around the world from totally new angles. I'd like to make "sounds
of cities" the leading topic for this time's conversation with
Nishimura Yoshiaki about "Redesigning Tokyo".

Kawaguchi Yui + Hojo Kaori: REM

What distinguishes Germany-based Kawaguchi Yui are her long,
beautiful limbs that give her dance a highly energetic edge.
This time she presents a piece that was realized in collaboration
with multi-talented Hojo Kaori, who is responsible for the
scenario, choreography and music. Divided into two parts, "REM"
begins with a dance performance, to which theatrical elements are
added in the second half. Not only in our dreams but also when
we're awake, Rapid Eye Movements (R.E.M.) enable us to perceive
the world three-dimensionally, in so-called saccades.
This performance features a "saccade-based display", a piece of
hi-tech art that makes use of this mechanism to produce images
inside the brain. It will no doubt be interesting to see how
these go together with the performance on stage.
