Vol. 090: Dance in Japan
by Ozaki Tetsuya

I was a member of the selection committee for this year's Toyota
Choreography Award, which was established in 2001 by Toyota Motor
Corporation in partnership with Setagaya Public Theatre as a
prize given to outstanding dancers and choreographers. I was told
that the role of a "member of the selection committee" was
different from that of a "judge", and rather comparable to someone
who runs through books to make selections. However, since the eight
selected works were to be featured in "Nextage", a public event and
at the same time the stage where the final decision for the award
is made, I was feeling considerable pressure and responsibility.

(2) Event Pick of the Week
===============================================================

Noi the Albino (Noi Albinoi)

This one is set in a small village in Iceland. Noi is a 17-year-old
boy without hair and eyebrows, and although basically a good boy,
he often stays away from school and has problems integrating into
his environment. One day then, Noi falls in love. After the
low-keyed illustration of Noi's life, the strange timing when
laughter is suddenly introduced to the movie gives it a peculiar
taste. Director Dagur Kari reportedly gets his inspiration for
films from such animations as "The Simpsons" -- a point you'll
perfectly understand when watching "Noi the Albino," which begins
with grandma's gun shot to wake the boy up, and ends with a
humorous scene that is blacker than black.
--Oh! Shomei
