Maeda Keizo (producer, Conversation) vol. 008

April 27 (Tue) & 28 (Wed)

Kyupi Kyupi is a celebrated visual/performance unit in the Kansai
area -- especially in their home town Kyoto -- and this summer
we're planning to push them also here in Tokyo. I spend these
days seeing their mini live show and meeting them to discuss the
strategy. They don't seem to be too wild about being labeled as
"artists", but rather seem to be aiming to escape the dead-end
street between mere subjective expression and universal beauty
that one often sees in art. This time's performance showed them
consistently pursuing their goal, and although strictly speaking
it's not much more than an ordinary live music performance,
they're attaching much importance to details such as costumes or
imagery that emphasize the gorgeousness of the divas and dancers
on stage. Look forward to their invasion of Tokyo this summer!

Nextage

This Toyota Choreography Award event is only held for the third
time, but it already has a reputation as a gateway for newcomers
to success in the dance world. Next to the The Grand Prix that
is given to outstanding "next generation" choreographers, viewers
have the opportunity to vote for the Toyota original "Audience
Prize". Candidates this year include Shintai Hyogen Circle, who
have caused a stir in the Japan Contemporary Dance Network with
their "wrestling men in G-strings" performance (which has nothing
to do with nude wrestling adult entertainment); Yasumoto Masako,
who is on her "animal trail" through the Japanese dance scene;
former Bagnolet "banned" dancer Ohashi Kakuya; and Yanaihara
Mikuni, in fact a pillar in present contemporary Japanese dance,
rather than a choreographer from the "next generation".
