Kubota Kenji (curator, Art Tower Mito) vol. 004

December 31
I spend New Year's Eve watching Akebono wrestling with Bob Sapp,
and then the "Kohaku Utagassen" song contest on TV. Both are
"family entertainment" kind of regulars in the year-end program,
and even though I try to see them as spectacular and funny, I
can't help but feel sick about the tediousness and mediocrity.
However, I think that these two programs are symbolic of
contemporary Japanese culture, and with the dismal thought in

Jagatara Matsuri: Kuninamashie
by Editorial Staff

It has been 14 years since singer Edo Akemi, who is known for
such biting comments as "no way rock becomes the plaything of
the bourgeoisie's paragons", "No Nukes! No Haircuts!" or "the
earthling is the danger" departed this life. With the cherished
desire of the late Edo, OTO and the other "Jagatara remnants"
have invited for this event a number of artists who "emit
positive vibes aimed at a sustainable world. The line-up
includes Shibusa Shirazu, Chikada Haruo's former band The
Lunatic Thunder, Ukawa Naohiro (planned), and others.
With projections of images from "One Hundred Years of Idiocy,"
various items on sale, as well as food and drinks, it's going
to be a funky all-night party.
