Vol. 080: ART iT Criticism and Counterargument II
by Ozaki Tetsuya

Another text Mr. D presents candid advice about is my column
"20 Pieces of Crap...," quoting me as saying that "art is better
when it's big." I'm having difficulties now replying to this,
since that is a statement I never made. When I wrote that "I want
[art] to express an excess of desire not found in a normal person,"
I was talking about an "excess of desire" as a necessary (and not
a sufficient) condition. As one example for a work that failed to
express its creators' desires clearly, I mentioned the too small
"Fuji Apple Power" by Kaori and Mariko. What I'm not saying, however,
is that it would have been better if it was big. How could I.

Goto Shigeo ("Tokyo Gathering") Vol. 007

January

The flames of Fushimi InariAccording to a custom I've been
continuing for more than ten years, I jumped on a Shinkansen
train to pay my annual year-end visit to Fushimni Inari shrine
in Kyoto. It was pretty warm around the turn of the year.
Throughout 2003 I've been preparing for my ASP (Art Studies &
Production) class at Kyoto University of Art and Design, spending
about half of the week in Tokyo and the other half in Kyoto.
However, both teaching staff and new students to join from this
spring promise quite an interesting time. I'm now publishing a
studies paper, and managed to practise the production of symposia,
exhibitions, etc. I'm proud to have set up something even more
nifty than existing cutting-edge art institutions. Whenever you're
in the neighborhood, just drop by.

I Wanna Be Your Cat

Celebrating Valentine's Day at a nice hotel is not quite a new
idea, but this year the chic boutique hotel Claska hosts what
promises to be a special party. With the "Songs of Elektronika"
compilation (photo) released in December, Tokyo's F-Recordings
label invites Swedish techno/house dandy Hakan Lidbo to visit
Japan for the first time under his Data80 alias. Along with his
live performance and the DJ sets of electroclash specialist Paul
James, Toby, and others, the works of fashion/commercial
photographer Zigen enhance the glamour, making this event a sexy
alternative for lovers' day.
