Vol. 102: Tactical Museum
by Ozaki Tetsuya

Last weekend the Japanese art world was shaken by staggering news.
Architect Isozaki Arata, the director of the 2005 Yokohama
International Triennale of Contemporary Art that is scheduled
for next fall, announced that he might step down. He did so in
a speech at a symposium in Yokohama, and as far as I know, with
the exception of a nebulous article in the Yokohama Keizai Shimbun
for some reason there was no serious report in the media.
The only place where I found a straight mention of Isozaki's
"announcement of resignation" was Roger McDonald's blog site.

Air Sculptures: Next Route release party

Appearing (at the SOUND X VISION opening event among others) as
a solo artist or collaborator, performer or producer all across
the country, Pardon Kimura is one of the most active sound
artists in Japan these days. The newest CD release that carries
his sonic signature is a Pardon-produced guitar + bass duo called
Air Sculptures. The music of Seta Kazuyuki and Udagawa Hiroshi
would probably sound like a groovier version of the Gabby & Lopez
guitar duo (see the CD review on our Book/Disk page), wasn't there
Pardon Kimura's experimentation with sounds of both natural and
artificial sources, that create settings ranging from stunningly
"real" to absurdly surreal for the bluesy jams. One of the smarter
ways to combine electronic and acoustic, the CD makes for exciting
listening, and the live version presented at this release party
will no doubt do its part to consolidate this.
