Vol. 085: Lonely Planet
by Ozaki Tetsuya

Finally, "ART iT" vol. 3 is going to hit the shops this weekend.
This time it's a special on photography in Japan. It is often
said that, with the exception perhaps of the work of Sugimoto
Hiroshi and a few others, "artistic" photography in the western
sense of the expression doesn't exist in Japan. That's not totally
wrong, but this doesn't necessarily mean that there is no GOOD
photography around. There certainly are brave photographers that
are ready to face the world equipped with nothing but their
cameras, and what they come up with is often striking. I believe
we've managed to make a good selection of such photographers and
their works, put together in a magazine full of material that
makes for rewarding reading and looking. Besides the growing
circulation in Japan, ART iT is now available from Amazon.com,
and also the distribution in countries like France is now taking
off. Even if you're not in Japan, you may find ART iT inlocal
your bookstore's Art section.

Communication - Discommunication

Here comes a kamikaze-style art event that begins with the step
of negotiating exhibition space in the streets of Mejiro. Among
the participants are the likes of adventurer Ishikawa Naoki and
Geisai-2 Grand Prix winner "Komainu", but since also a number
of art students are going to display their works, not much can
be anticipated about the outcome. Definitely interesting will be
the talk show with Ueshima Keiji and Ito Toshiharu (4/16, 17:00-
20:00), and Yamakawa Fuyuki's "voice" and "heartbeat" performance
(4/21, 15:00-16:00). Yamakawa, a leading khoomei singer, has
shown an emotional and pretty noisy electric guitar solo while
swinging his long hair at Kawaguchi Takao's recent dance
performance. What an awesome artist! Again, venues are being in
negotiation.
