LED/LCD displays (4 images)

continuing with the idea of an LED
numeric or alphanumeric display as
a new type of hardware, relating to
new encounters with alphabets, had
wanted to photograph an LED display
hooked up to a battery, attempting to
show what was previously written. the
photos are not so good but microscope
imagery shows an LCD fairly accurately.
the reason for this was to show how the
symbol maintains the entire structure of
the alphabet (14/16 segment display for
alphanumeric, 7 segment for numbers
which is shown below). this may relate
to the idea of a palimpsest, when the
background symbol can always be seen
yet the foreground shows the illuminated
number or letter as a text, containing every
number (or letter and number) in each digit.
thus, one piece of type is the entirety of the
typeface for an LED display, or possibly so.

the other type in question might be that of
the liquid crystal display (LCD) 'screen' in
which it acts somewhat like a blank slate
(tabula rasa?) in which a ribbon of small
channels of electrical instructions becomes
part of a layered screen sandwiched between
glass. applying battery power did nothing to
illuminate the screen and it is beyond knowing
right now how the alphabet may appear or what
is need for it to display, yet in the past when an
active LCD watch was placed under microscope
the surface of the screen is vibrantly activated,
and 'segments' much like those on the LED are
blackened out of the seemingly alive screen, as
if it were a shadow, or this is one impression, as
it is not made with light but by reflecting the light,
versus the previous alphabet. also, this display
is more like a page and can have many lines of
type, probably various spacing systems (height
of line, type size, font style) probably depending
on resolution and available computing power to
drive such a display of information, and detailing.

in all this is sent as additional information for the
idea that type has changed, but is also based in
hardware systems (of representation) and these
would seem comparable to physical pieces of
type hardware put into early printing presses (the
LED display) yet there is only one symbol used
per language or technology, or, as with illuminated
manuscripts, these words may be literally made
with emitted light. then again, the LCD is opposite
this as it requires reflected light, like a page of type
on a printed page, and is almost like an endless
printing press that can be used over and over to
rewrite the alphabet embedded or married to its
screen, the screen itself hard to separate from the
images of fonts and letters and numbers on the
LCD laptop or CRT screens of computers yet
having similar qualities in that, 'to see' language
with the hardware included may indicate there
is and has been a paradigm change in the basic
conception and relation to words/ideas electronic.
not sure, though had the stuff here and wanted to
share in case anyone can describe what this is.
