Agim Ceku, a Kosovo Albanian by origin, was a Yugoslav Army general.
Then he became a Croatian Army general, when Yugoslavia started
falling apart. He is accused by Serbs for having war crimes committed
under his command during the operation in region of Medak Pocket.
That story is well documented in reports by the Human Rights Watch.
However, an indictement against him has not been issued by the ICTY.
Instead he went on to become a commander of 'Protective Corps' of UN
ruled Kosovo after the war in 1999. Recently, he even offered 3000 of
his troops to fight under the US in Afghanistan. Yesterday (or today)
he was reportedly detained by Slovenian authorities on an Interpol
warrant, during his trip from Croatia to Kosovo. It is interesting
that he chose to travel South over Croatia's Northern neighbor. And
the report is not giving details about the Interpol warrant. While it
is likely that Slovenia would let him go under EU pressure, it is not
clear what kind of legal status internationally does he have. Is he a
hero or a criminal or does that really depend so severely on the day-
to-day political interpretation?
