DMF2003: inter/active/trans/media
Media, Imperialism and Propaganda
from the Philippine-American War to the Present

"Caricatures of Osama bin Laden printed on toilet paper are sold on the
Internet. Major newspapers print cartoons of various Arabs with exaggerated
beards and signature headpieces. Images like these have proved to have
power in molding people’s minds with lasting effects long after words and
headlines are gone." (“Imaging the Enemy”, AsianWeek.com).

Taking from 19th to early 20th century US imperialist cartoons gathered by
Filipino-American activists based in California, and the Yankee Doodles
exhibition held at the CCP, young digital artists from the UP College of
Fine Arts investigate the renewed relevance of imaging in popular media in
“inter/active/trans/media - media, imperialism and propaganda.” The
interactive works are presented in a CD-ROM and documented through the
Digital Media Fest website <http://digitalmedia.upd.edu.ph/dmf2003/>
launched in time for the Manila visit of US Pres. George W Bush, October
18, 2003.
