GENITRON at Sightsonic
16 - 19 Oct
11:00 - 23:00
City Screen, York

Genitron is a DVD Film by Glasgow based brothers John and Paul Butler
who have employed 'spoken word, electronic tonalities and abstract
visuals' in their innovative exploration of the capabilities of the
DVD medium. The non-linear narrative of Genitron is based on the
internal musings of a computer database. 'The protagonist is an
artificial being, an emergent property of the ever increasing
aggregation of human data. Genitron represents the cosmogenic
processes unleashed by the madness of measurement. I
t illustrates the appetite for reduction that drives these forces'.
The Butler Brothers have been creating digital media work for over
ten years, achieving acclaim in both the art gallery and on broadcast
television. Their work is often darkly satirical and beautifully
executed using, apparently simple but highly effective 3D character
animation. Their installation the Dream of Freedom was shown at
Lovebytes in 1995 and their award winning animated series 'Workgroup
Alpha' i!
s also included in its entirety on the Volatile Media along with
Genitron on the Volatile Media DVD available from

SHEFFIELD INTERNATIONAL DOCUMENTARY FESTIVAL and LOVEBYTES present:

THE FUTURE IS NOT WHAT IT USED TO BE
[TULEVAISUUS EI OLE ENTISENSÄ]
Dir:Mika Taanila, Finland, 2002, 53mins

Wednesday, 15 October 2003, 9pm

Showroom Cinema, 7 Paternoster Row. Sheffield S1 2BX
Festival Box Office 0114-275 7727

'I register everything with manic precision,' says Erkki Kurenniemi,
as he dictates notes with a mobile phone about the precise layer of
snow covering the Finnish landscape. The notes, along with 20,000
photos he takes annually, will contribute to his unusual video diary
project: a reconstruction of his life to be premiered in July, 2048.
But Kurenniemi is no crackpot; he's a founding father of the
electronic music revolution, and spent the last forty years exploring
the cutting edge of technology.

'Erkki Kurenniemi is a genuine pioneer.'Mika Vainio, Pan Sonic.

Mika Taanila has been invited to the festival and will be available
for Question & Answer after the screening.

Presented with the support of the Finnish Institute in London.
